Re: Windows 8...Adobe...etc.
Hi,
Ownly jfw 14 works with windows 8. They had to change how things worked sense win8 doesn't support mirror display anymore.

Subject: Windows 8...Adobe...etc. Hi all: Coming in maybe a little late here, but for some reason I tend to receive digests not that often. Anyway, regarding JAWS and Windows 8, JAWS 14 is the version that will work most optimally with Windows 8. That doesn't necessarily mean that other versions won't work. Then again if it's anything like Office 2013, it very well could be the only version that works, but it's a matter of trial and error, I suppose. s for Adobe, you want to set the preferences in Adobe such that files don't open in your browser. But now that I've written this I don't think you can actually set this in Adobe anymore. Ithink it has to be done from within the browser itself...but I don't have the steps ready...sorry. You'd better stick to JAWS 14. I doubt that JAWS 12 will work, and unsure of 13.

Hi,
Is there any major issue with putting Jaws 12, 13 or 14 on a brand new Windows 8 machine? Has anyone run into any major issues doing so? Is the interface more touch-screen oriented, than Windows 7?
Looking at several ultrabook models, and in all honesty, the Windows 8 models are cheaper than their equivalent Windows 7 64 bit systems.

If I were you, I would steer clear of HP laptops. I use one at work, and my wife bought me one for my birthday. It's very fast, but it has its hang-ups. One particular issue that I hate, is when IE crashes, it locks up JAWS, and the only way I can get it to start talking again, is to either restart it, or have a sighted person help me figure out what the message is, and click on it. Then and only then, JAWS will start working again. This is not a JAWS issue because it doesn't happen on other computers that I use.

Are all HP laptops out there like this where the F keys are secondary to other functions, meaning you have to hit FN to use them? I'm looking into
getting a new laptop because this mac book I've been running XP in boot camp on has the left and right arrow keys broken, so I've had to remap away the application key I was using to have right arrow. I'm looking to get something which doesn't have too odd of a keyboard layout though as I
may need to bring this for temporary jobs, and trying to get a full size keyboard into a bag is difficult when the laptop will take up most of it.

James, yes it does, when using jaws in internet explorer you do the combo insert+f7 to get links, insert+f6 to get the headings. in order to get the insert key you must press the fn key because it is also the print screen key, also the f keys also have other functions and the fn key
must be pressed in order to use the f keys.

This doesn't really have a whole lot to do with JAWS, really. Probably more appropriate for the blindtech list. Just in case you weren't actually aiming it at this list.

I doubt it, unless you enable the sticky keys feature in the accessibility page, then carefully use that key sequence on Fn. However no guarantee that sticky keys will work with Fn.

Hi, Cy, The reason why I posted as to why I did not buy a HP laptop 4 months ago
is that their so called tech support for disabled could not agree on a means of permanently returning the "F1 etc. keys" back to their original uses; and other people had trouble atempting all the 3 fixes that HP could not offer as workable. The Acer laptops do not have that problem.

This is interesting. My wife's HP Notebook came with the media setting on those function keys. If I need to use her computer I use an USB keyboaard and the function keys on the USB keyboard work normally. My HP does not have this problem, thankfully. Cy

Kevin,
That's incredible, and I'd toss out that HP Laptop if it's really true that you have to use the Fn key for any Insert + key operation, Why not use the JAWS Laptop layout so that the Caps Lock key is the JAWS key? Would make a lot more sense than what you're going through.

JAWS is reading the information correctly. Just pay attention to the options your web browser presents to you. I'd also recommend subscribing to the blindtech list, as the more general tech questions are better served over there.

All I know is when I tried putting JAWS 11. on, it would not work right and Freedom Scientific told me I needed JAWS 14.

Hi,
Is there any major issue with putting Jaws 12, 13 or 14 on a brand new Windows 8 machine? Has anyone run into any major issues doing so? Is the interface more touch-screen oriented, than Windows 7?
Looking at several ultrabook models, and in all honesty, the Windows 8 models are cheaper than their equivalent Windows 7 64 bit systems.

James, yes it does, when using jaws in internet explorer you do the combo insert+f7 to get links, insert+f6 to get the headings. in order to get the insert key you must press the fn key because it is also the print screen key, also the f keys also have other functions and the fn key must be pressed in order to use the f keys.

I doubt it, unless you enable the sticky keys feature in the accessibility page, then carefully use that key sequence on Fn. However no guarantee that sticky keys will work with Fn.

was the fastest with the requirements I wanted and the lightest for what it contains. I'm running Windows 8, Jaws 14 and 64 bit.

Kevin,
When you're presented with the run or save, press Alt+S and that should
get you in the dialog to specify a file name and location.

Dennis,
Possible, but some keys are mapped to the JAWS quick navigation (k, l, g,
z, x, c, etc.) so I avoid suggesting a single-letter option.

Hi,
Is there any major issue with putting Jaws 12, 13 or 14 on a brand new Windows 8 machine? Has anyone run into any major issues doing so? Is the interface more touch-screen oriented, than Windows 7?
Looking at several ultrabook models, and in all honesty, the Windows 8 models are cheaper than their equivalent Windows 7 64 bit systems.

When in the library you might find some lists that don't give all the information you think they should have. I realized that Jaws has a tool that helps in this case. Customize list view, makes those lists behave.
You can have several views In the Winamp library with different columns in each list so you might want to use customize list view for each one.
I notice the scripts that I'm using have SysListView32=1 set in Jaws window classes. Perhaps this is why the lists work for me.
I have no documentation on the scripts. I found them at the jfwlite web site. WinAmp Scripts or Jaws 7 and greater Updated by Jim Grimsby to add Library Support http://www.jfwlite.com/programs.html

Hi. With the interest on this list in Windows 8 in mind, I've just read an article explaining that many existing computers, even some recently produced ones, can't handle it. Finding out which computers are affected can be difficult.
The article appears in this evening's Wall Street Journal. If you don't have a subscription, the article will be made available for free, either sometime soon or already, at: www.walt.allthingsd.com

I don't believe there has been a separate accessible version for several releases now. I think that ended around version 6.

Hi,
I am trying to download the latest adobe acrobat reader accessibility version. When I press enter on download, Jaws used to read "downloading file" and gave me options to run, save, etc. Jaws says nothing. I am using Jaws 14; anyone had this trouble or know how to fix it. I turned off pop up blocker, but that did not change anything.
Thanks.
Sincerely,

Even simpler, open IE and press JAWS key+control+v. This JAWS command announces the version number of the open application.

Thanks; it's internet explorer 10. I used to be able to use Jaws on a web site like my bank, select a statement period and press on it to download and a new window would open up Jaws would say and then I would have 2 windows: an acrobat one and an IE one according to Jaws. Now, I try to open up that statement in IE, and Jaws gives me a blank window. How can I have 2
windows open so I can print my statement off and then close that window out and go back to my site?
I don't know if I'm having a Jaws 14 issue or an internet explorer issue.

Hi,
I just explained I don't know if it's my lack of knowledge of Jaws 14 or IE10, but on my bank web site for instance, I used to be able to in XP, IE old version & Jaws 12, choose a statement to view and Jaws would tell me a new window opened up and then I could print that one and close it to
return to the bank's web site.
Now, on the web site, I chose the file I want to view in .pdf and press altN which gets me the window I want and can print it. But I can't seem to return to the web site and have to close out of IE10, relaunch it, and go to the web site and start over. I shouldn't think this should be so hard? What am I doing wrong?
Sincerely,
Lauren

Open adobe from your programs or from the shortcut if you have on and I can't remember which of the menus it is under but you want preferences and then find where you can change when in the internet to open a pdf with adobe and not in the internet and then you will have it opened with adobe and when finished you can go to file, close and close that doc. Then go to file and exit and adobe will quit. Note: I have found some times just going to file and exit it will sometimes lock up your p c. I have not had this issue when I close the doc. First then exit adobe.

Alt f for file arrow down to close and hit enter. Now the doc. Is closed but adobe is still open now you can alt tab through the open apps or if you are finished with adobe do another alt f and arrow down to exit and hit enter. Note; I have noticed sometimes in the past if I just went to exit my pc would lock up, but since I close the doc. First then exit adobe I have not had any issues

Even simpler, open IE and press JAWS key+control+v. This JAWS command announces the version number of the open application.

Hi, try right clicking on the link. You can also try alt N to see if it gives you any options.

Hi,
I am trying to download the latest adobe acrobat reader accessibility version. When I press enter on download, Jaws used to read "downloading file" and gave me options to run, save, etc. Jaws says nothing. I am using Jaws 14; anyone had this trouble or know how to fix it. I turned off pop up blocker, but that did not change anything.
Thanks.
Sincerely,
Lauren

Hi I can't help you with your problem but can give you a headsup and some advice. Don't bother with windows messanger rather switch to sending messages in skype. The reason I say this is because windows will be discontinueing windows messanger and from the 15th of March it will stop working because they want people to rather use skype.

I thought I was following this thread, but now I'm not so sure. Are we talking about Acrobat Reader, or Adobe Acrobat, which I've never actually used? I remember faking my way through Acrobat 3. I'd select the entire document, and paste it into Word. It was no thing of beauty, but it
worked. Ted

Alt f for file arrow down to close and hit enter. Now the doc. Is closed but adobe is still open now you can alt tab through the open apps or if
you are finished with adobe do another alt f and arrow down to exit and hit enter. Note; I have noticed sometimes in the past if I just went to exit my pc would lock up, but since I close the doc. First then exit adobe I have not had any issues
