I assume you're referring to the DECtalk USB site. DECtalk Express is no
longer manufactured, and I'm one of the few lucky people who still has one.

I saw on the DecTalk site that they claim it should work, con't you get a
unit for testing, if not then you should contact them for confirmation.

to be clear, I'm not talking about the USB or software versions of
Dectalk.
Just the hardware, Dectalk Express.

It just says blank page in IE and won't read emails either.

Has perhaps the video intercept got corrupted but I can't find where

Re: Latest JFW 14 upgrade and bugs

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

That's interesting. I know Windows 8 is radically different and that JAWS (and all screen readers) "hook" into the operating system much differently than before, but I had not heard that the "hook" or some aspect of the "hook" had changed as far back as Vista.
BTW,
The update works fine (so far) on my Windows 8 machine.
Too chicken to try it on my Windows 7 machine, given the reports on this list.

Re: JAWS 14...?

Bissett, Tom <tom.bissett@...>

Unfortunately there are so many versions of everything and so many levels of expertise that it is almost imposible to cover everything.
Even though persons are running what appears to be the same versions of jaws and operating system they seem to act differently, probably because of other things running on the computer or as Eric pointed out that people don't keep current with patches and updates on their operating systems.
So if you have people running XP it doesn't mean that they are on the same service pack version. It all has an impact.
I have installed the update, deleted some stuff out of my personal folder and things appear to be running just fine.

Tom Bisset

Reading all these messages makes me nervous about installing JAWS 14.
Doesn't Freedom Scientific have any sort of quality control so previous parts of the program, which work properly, are retained and the "hot fix"
doesn't mess up something else? I also thought that beta testing was done to find problems with the program, before release. If this is done, then why is a hot fix needed so soon after the release of JAWS 14?

I've been a JAWS user for at least 15 years and probably won't change now.
But, I can understand why others are abandoning ship for other options. We pay a premium price for JAWS, but the money is apparently not going to development and quality control.

in all your ways submit to him,

Why don't you address these issues directly to Eric Damery? You can contact him at:

Reading all these messages makes me nervous about installing JAWS 14. Doesn't Freedom Scientific have any sort of quality control so previous parts of the program, which work properly, are retained and the "hot fix" doesn't mess up something else? I also thought that beta testing was done to find problems with the program, before release. If this is done, then why is a hot fix needed so soon after the release of JAWS 14?

I've been a JAWS user for at least 15 years and probably won't change now. But, I can understand why others are abandoning ship for other options. We pay a premium price for JAWS, but the money is apparently not going to development and quality control.

You're lucky it has worked this long. I haven't been able to run that
display since JAWS 10. I'd dearly love to have it working again!

So the lab computers at work are running Jaws 13, build 638, and my work
laptop is running version 13, the next build or so up from that. I could
also install version 14. I'm wondering why the check box for adding the
Braille Voyager display isn't available in the later build of 13? We're
using braille displays from work that have been retired, and the display
will install on the lab computers because of its being listed in the add
braille display options, but I'd really like to go ahead and use this on the

laptop with docking station. Any suggestions? I realize it could be the
driver signing problem, but would they drop the support in the middle of a
version of Jaws between builds?
Thanks a lot.
Matthew

You're welcome. My answer might have made more since if I had put
INSERT+SPACE BAR. There is something to be said for proof reading what you

Press the +Spacebar, then press o. You now have a list of different scans
you can perform. Choose one and press enter on it.

Subject: Accessing OCR Function In Jaws 13 for Scanned Image PDF Files

Hi, all.

At work, I am getting increasing numbers of scanned image PDF files.

I have the K1000 software from Kurzweil, but still need to get a scanner
to
interface with that program.

In the meantime, can someone give me a quick summary of the key commands
that are used to do the OCR recognition via Jaws 13 in Windows 7, at least
for the time being?

I consulted the help file in Jaws 13, but got what seemed to be confusing
instructions.

The help file said to use the insert key, plus the space bar and the
letter
S to start the reading, but I could never get it to work. Perhaps I'm
doing

the key conbination incorrectly.

Again, I'm using Jaws 13, with Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Re: Latest JFW 14 upgrade and bugs

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

How did you do that? I remember the old days of patches, but, these days we seem to get entirely new downloads. I've only had to roll back once recently, and that was here at the office earlier this year.

Hi,

I have just uninstalled the hotfix and gone back to:

J14.0.918-64bit.exe

However it is playing up with the virtual cursor and IE9 and Outlook 2010.

It just says blank page in IE and won't read emails either.

Has perhaps the video intercept got corrupted but I can't find where you fix
that? Where do I go?

I am on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.

Thanks,
Dale.

Re: Issue with JFW 13 and IE 8.

Jimmy Jones

I have also ran into this problem with JAWS 13. Its usually some sort of
message asking if I am sure I want to leave the web page. Nothing I do with
the keyboard seems to effect this window. However, a simple click of the
mouse and I am ready to go. Speech returns and JAWS acts like nothing has
happened. It is curious.

Mike, having used jaws 13 and Windows 7 and i.e. 8 for a good year, I've not
come across this one. I'm not saying it doesn't happen to you, just that I
haven't seen it.
Cheers

Hello folks! I'm having an issue on my work computer. I use windows 7,
along with Jaws 13 and at least once a day, IE encounters a problem, and
wants to close the particular web-page that I am on. When this happens,
JAWS stops speaking. I have to utilize sighted assistance to click the
message. Once that happens, JAWS works right again. Left to my own
devices, if this error occurs, I have to do a hard reboot of my computer
system. I hate doing this, because I'd rather shut the computer down
properly. Any suggestions? I know it is a rather odd problem. One that I
do not encounter on my home computer.

DECtalk Express with Windows 7/8 32/64-bit

Adrian Spratt

My question is whether anyone on this list has actual experience to confirm
that DECtalk Express works with 32-bit versions of Windows 7 or 8 and, which
hasn't been asked before, with 64-bit versions of those operating systems?

to be clear, I'm not talking about the USB or software versions of Dectalk.
Just the hardware, Dectalk Express.

Thanks.
