Lauren:
As far as which screen reader is "more powerful". My suggestion would
be to
Install demos for all the screen readers you are curious about.
Window eyes just released their latest version and I hear its not to
bad.
I believe when asking which is better, powerful, etc, you will receive
hundreds of opinions and will discombobulate your mind.
NVDA is free, system access, www.satogo.com, an of course you have jaws
and
window eyes.

It is very confusing. Maybe I never figured out all the stuff Jaws is
suppose to do since half the time with any version I could not get it
to
read text in jaws mode or tell me what I'm trying to change in spell
checker. Aside though, getting back to the topic, how accessible is
Window
Eyes versus Jaws? I want to be able to read texts, edit them, navigate
my
way around a web page in less than an hour, etc.

Is Window Eyes more powerful than a voice over for the Mac?

I am sorry that I did not find this email earlier.
My experience with the Mac system is setting them up and installing
Microsoft Office and what ever else needs to be added, most of the
time
installing Mountain Lion.
If a person is starting over, the Mac will save them a lot of money,
asuming
that the hardware holds up.
I do not own a Mac, but I will within the month.
The Mac is no good to a low vision user who may use ZoomText with
enlargement 4X or larger, but they can get away with using it with
lower
enlargement. But ZoomText may come out with a Mac version and change
all
that.
I am a JAWS user since Windows 3.11, and JAWS has changed how they do
business and I do not thinks it is good. I do like JAWS 14, but have
only
use it a little.
The future for me is using both the Mac and Windows. When the
Veterans
Administration switches to Windows 8, I will have to get a Windows 8
computer.

My experience with Voice Over is limited, but I know totally blind
who use
it. I know it is not as powerful as JAWS, but how many people use
all the
features of JAWS, not many that I have trained. But on this list you
will
find a lot of computer users that are JAWS Power users.

But buying a new system, if money is not an issue, it does not matter
what
you buy. But if money is an issue, $200. per year upgrade price of
JAWS
is
something that should be considered. If I were starting over, I
would go
with Windows Eyes for a screen readered if I needed a Windows system,
other
wise I would go with the Mac.
But I am not spending the money, and the byer got a lot of input, and
I am
sure that what ever the byer chooses, she will be happy.
When I train someone on adaptive software, usually the first session
leaves
the person in a position where they want to destroy the new computer,
but
after the third session, they are very happy and will tell us things
they
could do now that they could not do, so what ever the choice, hang in
their,
it does not take long to get over the hump.
John

My experience with voice over is in support of enlargement and
training
from
the Apple store in voice over.

John Sherrer,
Wild and unsupported assertions like this cast doubt on your other
claims,
such as for the accessibility of MS Office on Apple computers. If
you're
willing to risk libeling Avast and the Czech Republic, you'd better
link
to
legitimate news sources, and if you're going to claim MS Office is
accessible on apple, you ought to state if you're saying so from your
own
experience. It's hard enough selecting the right versions of JAWS,
Office,
Windows and other applications without complicating the decision
process
with vague claims for Apple. I, too, wish Apple provided the same
level of
voice support that we get with JAWS for real-world office and other
work.
Aesthetically, Apple products are very desirable.

John,

I would tend to agree, and indeed my studio DAW still runs fine
with XP.
However the applications are stable and I've not done any major
upgrades in the past 4 years.

The problem I see is that if I do upgrade my major studio
applications, I'll be forced to first upgrade to Windows 7 in
order that they work. And that presumes that I don't upgrade to
a
newer processor or hardware overall.
Purchasing a new computer means getting W7 pre-installed at the
very least.

So if a person is satisfied with the hardware, versions of
software, and JAWS that are running on XP, there's no reason to
upgrade to W7.

Windows 8 is not a touch screen environment unless you buy a
computer with
a touch screen; it's just set up to use a touch screen if you
have one.
If you are familiar with Windows 7 and happy with it, it would
probably be
better for you to stick with it since Windows 8 has an entirely
new layout
to learn. I would suspect that Windows 7 will be supported by
Microsoft as long as your new computer will last.

Kimsan,

I've
already run into more than one, just with the iPod and iPhone

Once we get voiceover turned on, I insist on their sitting

I know we aren't supposed to train them, but how else will

I have spoken with a couple of people in the past where they

However, that doesn't mean squat but I am just responding to
the statement about reps in the stores and how much they know
how to use voice over and provide demonstration.
For that very same reason is why I decided to provide voice
over training at BlindAccessTraining.com, because the entire
team is comprised of totally blind individuals and have
experience working with what we advertise.
So, when folks tell me that reps over at apple are the

Dave,
I wonder how many of those folks in an Apple store really
know
how to use the VoiceOver screen reader well enough to show
how
well it works with various applications. Even if you found a
knowledgeable person, how long would you be able to spend
working with a Mac in a store environment to get a good idea
of
how well a Mac would work for you?

In a Mac versus Windows PC discussion we had on the list a
while ago, I recall that it was the opinion of those folks
who
had used both platforms that as long as you did simple tasks
like email, Internet, playing a few tunes, etc, the Mac was
quite usable. However, if you wanted to do serious office
work, your productivity would be much better on a Windows-
based
PC with JAWS or another commercial screen reader. Microsoft
has never made much effort to write their Office software to
be
accessible on the Mac platform, so a Mac user would need to
find workable substitutes for Word Excel, etc.

Anyone planning to go to a Mac should ask lots of questions
on
the Mac user groups for the blind and listen to a number of
podcasts that have been done on Mac accessibility. Blind
Cool
Tech has quite a few of those podcasts that may be helpful.
I
don't have the URLs for the user groups, so a little Google
searching may be needed.

As to Mac vs. PC, you should go to your local Apple store,
making an appointment with the Genius Bar to have them sit
with you on a couple Macs and let you try it out. Best way I

Hi everyone,
I'm currently having an issue with Jaws 14. Note that this wasn't present with Jaws 12. I upgraded to version 14 a few days ago. I wasn't having any issues with JAWS 12. However, now it seems like JAWS only reads the previous web page even if I'm already on a different page. Sometimes I read an article, and when I'm done, I open another page. However, JAWS still reads the previous page even though I'm not on that page anymore. It also happens when I'm on YouTube. I play a video, when the video is over, I play another video, but JAWS is still reading information from the previous video. It's really getting annoying specially when I'm doing research for college. If you guys have an idea of how to fix this, please shoot me a message. Thanks,
A

Hi Lorin
If you have the choice, I would go with the Mac system. Upgrades and
software are cheap. And once you buy an application, you get the
upgrades with no cost. The last operating system upgrade cost $29.
Many totally blind do well with Voice over, the Mac screen reader.
But a more powerful screen reader is available for the Mac for $250.
For an exttra $100. you can get all the one on one training you want
in one hour sessions for a year.
In our area the training is good, but I saw emails where the training
is not good.
Once you learn it, you will save money, and the hardware seems to be
very drillable.

Lauren:
As far as which screen reader is "more powerful". My suggestion would be to
Install demos for all the screen readers you are curious about.
Window eyes just released their latest version and I hear its not to bad.
I believe when asking which is better, powerful, etc, you will receive
hundreds of opinions and will discombobulate your mind.
NVDA is free, system access, www.satogo.com, an of course you have jaws and
window eyes.

It is very confusing. Maybe I never figured out all the stuff Jaws is
suppose to do since half the time with any version I could not get it to
read text in jaws mode or tell me what I'm trying to change in spell
checker. Aside though, getting back to the topic, how accessible is Window
Eyes versus Jaws? I want to be able to read texts, edit them, navigate my
way around a web page in less than an hour, etc.

Is Window Eyes more powerful than a voice over for the Mac?

I am sorry that I did not find this email earlier.
My experience with the Mac system is setting them up and installing
Microsoft Office and what ever else needs to be added, most of the time
installing Mountain Lion.
If a person is starting over, the Mac will save them a lot of money,
asuming
that the hardware holds up.
I do not own a Mac, but I will within the month.
The Mac is no good to a low vision user who may use ZoomText with
enlargement 4X or larger, but they can get away with using it with lower
enlargement. But ZoomText may come out with a Mac version and change all
that.
I am a JAWS user since Windows 3.11, and JAWS has changed how they do
business and I do not thinks it is good. I do like JAWS 14, but have only
use it a little.
The future for me is using both the Mac and Windows. When the Veterans
Administration switches to Windows 8, I will have to get a Windows 8
computer.

My experience with Voice Over is limited, but I know totally blind who use
it. I know it is not as powerful as JAWS, but how many people use all the
features of JAWS, not many that I have trained. But on this list you will
find a lot of computer users that are JAWS Power users.

But buying a new system, if money is not an issue, it does not matter what
you buy. But if money is an issue, $200. per year upgrade price of JAWS
is
something that should be considered. If I were starting over, I would go
with Windows Eyes for a screen readered if I needed a Windows system,
other
wise I would go with the Mac.
But I am not spending the money, and the byer got a lot of input, and I am
sure that what ever the byer chooses, she will be happy.
When I train someone on adaptive software, usually the first session
leaves
the person in a position where they want to destroy the new computer, but
after the third session, they are very happy and will tell us things they
could do now that they could not do, so what ever the choice, hang in
their,
it does not take long to get over the hump.
John

My experience with voice over is in support of enlargement and training
from
the Apple store in voice over.

John Sherrer,
Wild and unsupported assertions like this cast doubt on your other claims,
such as for the accessibility of MS Office on Apple computers. If you're
willing to risk libeling Avast and the Czech Republic, you'd better link
to
legitimate news sources, and if you're going to claim MS Office is
accessible on apple, you ought to state if you're saying so from your own
experience. It's hard enough selecting the right versions of JAWS, Office,
Windows and other applications without complicating the decision process
with vague claims for Apple. I, too, wish Apple provided the same level of
voice support that we get with JAWS for real-world office and other work.

And that presumes that I don't upgrade to a
newer processor or hardware overall.

Kimsan,

I'm sure that a majority of Apple" genius-helpers are
incompetent when knowing how to help a blind person navigate a
MAC using voiceover.
I've
already run into more than one, just with the iPod and iPhone
setups.
However I've also managed to educate more than one by helping
them help me.
Once we get voiceover turned on, I insist on their sitting with
me for some keystrokes to get me going, and then I just play
around on my own and the so-called "genius" also learns.

I know we aren't supposed to train them, but how else will they
learn?
And
yes, their attention span resembles that of a gnat on caffeine,

I try to always take more than what they have to offer.

Dave,
I wonder how many of those folks in an Apple store really know
how to use the VoiceOver screen reader well enough to show how
well it works with various applications. Even if you found a
knowledgeable person, how long would you be able to spend
working with a Mac in a store environment to get a good idea of
how well a Mac would work for you?

In a Mac versus Windows PC discussion we had on the list a
while ago, I recall that it was the opinion of those folks who
had used both platforms that as long as you did simple tasks
like email, Internet, playing a few tunes, etc, the Mac was
quite usable. However, if you wanted to do serious office
work, your productivity would be much better on a Windows-based
PC with JAWS or another commercial screen reader. Microsoft
has never made much effort to write their Office software to be
accessible on the Mac platform, so a Mac user would need to
find workable substitutes for Word Excel, etc.

Anyone planning to go to a Mac should ask lots of questions on
the Mac user groups for the blind and listen to a number of
podcasts that have been done on Mac accessibility. Blind Cool

Best way I

Hi, all.

At work, I am getting increasing numbers of scanned image PDF files.

I have the K1000 software from Kurzweil, but still need to get a scanner to
interface with that program.

In the meantime, can someone give me a quick summary of the key commands
that are used to do the OCR recognition via Jaws 13 in Windows 7, at least
for the time being?

I consulted the help file in Jaws 13, but got what seemed to be confusing
instructions.

The help file said to use the insert key, plus the space bar and the letter
S to start the reading, but I could never get it to work. Perhaps I'm doing

the key conbination incorrectly.

Again, I'm using Jaws 13, with Windows 7.

Any help would be appreciated.

site. I've been using jaws 12 for the last couple of weeks as 14 won't let
me arrow normally down the page; reading lines over and over again before
moving on. Just wondering as I would like to use some of the new features of
jaws 14. thanks

Re: Jaws supports for a new language

Nguyen Van Dung <dungnv1984@...>

Hello Ari

Thank you for your mail.

I knew an organization in Vietnam which created a Vietnamese voice but I
could not contact it (I sent request but not getting any answer).

As I understand, I will have to create a vietnamese voice (as a talk
dictionary). But I don't know what is dictionary format?

How to integrate voice into Jaws What will I have to do in order to my voice
appears on Jaws voice Adjustment dialog (as a profile).

Actually, I've just touched this topic, so I do not have good knowledge
about it. So please tell me which kind of document I should read first to
understand more.

Thank you.

Dung Nguyen.

Re: Issue with JFW 13 and IE 8.

Aidan Maher <aidan.smarttalk@...>

I also get this in I E nine, but I herd that I E 10 wil also come to
windows7. So hopefully then they can fix it. I hate it when that
happens. I sometimes open NVDA, and get no speech and sometimes I do,
very random crap. I wish safari for windows was accessible.

This also happens in IE 9 at times too. It suddenly says Internet

the problem was occured. Its like it just crashes and in these last
few weeks it has happened quite alot to me but mine doesn't stop
talking completely. Gary's advice about starting NVDA then is a good
suggestion to just see if you can sort the problem out without having
to restart your system. Good luck

Hello folks! I'm having an issue on my work computer. I use windows 7,
along with Jaws 13 and at least once a day, IE encounters a problem, and
wants to close the particular web-page that I am on. When this happens,
JAWS stops speaking. I have to utilize sighted assistance to click the
message. Once that happens, JAWS works right again. Left to my own
devices, if this error occurs, I have to do a hard reboot of my computer
system. I hate doing this, because I'd rather shut the computer down
properly. Any suggestions? I know it is a rather odd problem. One
that

I do not encounter on my home computer.

Re: dropbox

What? they were very helpfull? Maybe i'm in another world, I got
nothing back from them and I ask for help on monday already. In the
mean time I con't shair links, or folders, nothing, just sinc between
already linked devices. I am sick of this unfair treatment.

Dropbox should be made accessible for us and at one point it was so I
hope it can become again. I a few times wrote to them but that was a
year or 2 ago and I said I was blind and they were very helpful. You
can only but give it a try, there is no harm in that.

Both that and their twitter are on their site. :)

If you have a twitter I'd suggest sending a tweet to @dropbox and tell
them about the accessability issues. I've already done it, but maybe
if a lot of people do it they'll fix the issues. It's a long shot, and
probably won't work, but it's worth trying. :) You may also want to
mention that you're blind. Just so they know. :)

If you can't geto the accept button from the email go to the site and
click on account. I can't remember where you'd go from there, but I've
done it that way, and it works. Eventually though, you should find
something that says "envites" with a number beside it. If you click
that you should be able to approve from there. Sorry if my
instructions aren't that helpful. Maybe someone can add in the details
I'm forgetting.

Hi,

Has anyone tried lately to share a folder in dropbox? When I
successfully
send the email and the other party receives it, the only link is to
view
the
folder not to except the share.

Any tips? Thoughts? Help?
