Again, its important to keep in mind that the larger your project are
in word or excel, the more slower you might achieve some tasks on mac,
there are just work arounds for some things, not solutions yet. I mean
if you have a spred sheet with hundreds of cels, you want to be able
to manage them quick and properly, I doubt it can be done on the mac,
and this comes from people who really are pro. So once you have
deadlines to meet, and if you must use office in a job where you
actually get paid, be carefull. Jaws and widnows would stil be the
better way to go.

Hi Lorin
MS Office is available for the Mac for $60.
But the Mac has Pages and Numnberws. Pages may cost $10, but you may

them to throw it in. I am not sure about the cost of numbers.

Hi Lorin
If you have the choice, I would go with the Mac system. Upgrades and
software are cheap. And once you buy an application, you get the
upgrades
with no cost. The last operating system upgrade cost $29. Many
totally
blind do well with Voice over, the Mac screen reader. But a more
powerful
screen reader is available for the Mac for $250.
For an exttra $100. you can get all the one on one training you want in

In our area the training is good, but I saw emails where the training

Once you learn it, you will save money, and the hardware seems to be

invoke CoolEdit and get View Available Networks?

Dale Heltzer

No kidding - I start my dear old copy of CoolEdit 2000 (under windows 7) and
JAWS tells me that "view available networks" comes up at least temporarily.

But, this doesn't *always happen; sometimes it's well-behaved.

Any ideas about what's going on?

Thanks.

On Windows if you don't want to install MS office then you can
download Jart which is a basic word processor and I use that all the
time. You could also then use notepad or wordpad so you have alot of
options and don't have to install MS office if you only want to use
Word but if you need Excel and publisher like you mentioned yesterday
then you may have to buy office.

John,

I would tend to agree, and indeed my studio DAW still runs fine
with XP.
However the applications are stable and I've not done any major
upgrades in the past 4 years.

The problem I see is that if I do upgrade my major studio
applications, I'll be forced to first upgrade to Windows 7 in
order that they work. And that presumes that I don't upgrade to a
newer processor or hardware overall.
Purchasing a new computer means getting W7 pre-installed at the
very least.

So if a person is satisfied with the hardware, versions of
software, and JAWS that are running on XP, there's no reason to
upgrade to W7.

Windows 8 is not a touch screen environment unless you buy a
computer with
a touch screen; it's just set up to use a touch screen if you
have one.
If you are familiar with Windows 7 and happy with it, it would
probably be
better for you to stick with it since Windows 8 has an entirely
new layout
to learn. I would suspect that Windows 7 will be supported by
Microsoft as long as your new computer will last.

I've

Once we get voiceover turned on, I insist on their sitting with

I know we aren't supposed to train them, but how else will they

I have spoken with a couple of people in the past where they
had terrible experiences with reps in apple stores and didn't
receive good help.
However, that doesn't mean squat but I am just responding to
the statement about reps in the stores and how much they know
how to use voice over and provide demonstration.
For that very same reason is why I decided to provide voice
over training at BlindAccessTraining.com, because the entire
team is comprised of totally blind individuals and have
experience working with what we advertise.
So, when folks tell me that reps over at apple are the
friendliest and most helpful folks you will be able to find,
well, I don't care if they are friendly but can you "help?"
I use pages to do a lot of the word processing and use numbers

Dave,
I wonder how many of those folks in an Apple store really know
how to use the VoiceOver screen reader well enough to show how
well it works with various applications. Even if you found a
knowledgeable person, how long would you be able to spend
working with a Mac in a store environment to get a good idea of
how well a Mac would work for you?

In a Mac versus Windows PC discussion we had on the list a
while ago, I recall that it was the opinion of those folks who
had used both platforms that as long as you did simple tasks
like email, Internet, playing a few tunes, etc, the Mac was
quite usable. However, if you wanted to do serious office
work, your productivity would be much better on a Windows-based
PC with JAWS or another commercial screen reader. Microsoft
has never made much effort to write their Office software to be
accessible on the Mac platform, so a Mac user would need to
find workable substitutes for Word Excel, etc.

Anyone planning to go to a Mac should ask lots of questions on
the Mac user groups for the blind and listen to a number of
podcasts that have been done on Mac accessibility. Blind Cool
Tech has quite a few of those podcasts that may be helpful. I
don't have the URLs for the user groups, so a little Google
searching may be needed.

Lauren,

As to Mac vs. PC, you should go to your local Apple store,
making an appointment with the Genius Bar to have them sit
with you on a couple Macs and let you try it out. Best way I
know of to be sure.

Hi,

Would Jaws 12 or 13 work with Windows 7 and has anyone used
Windows
8
with
Jaws 14?

I have to buy a new laptop and wonder which OS I should buy or
switch to an Apple where I don't have to shell out money for
upgrades of software like Jaws, but can't afford any less
accessibility as I am totally blind.

Any advice please, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Lauren

john,

You bring up good points on the Mac and its upgrades.

However a major disadvantage is access to music and audio production
applications, which Loren specifically mentioned. Sonar is accessible in
Windows with JAWS and other script applications. Power Tools and Cuebase are
not very accessible even at this time, especially in MIDI work.

Of course one has to do their own research, but in my experience the Windows
environment is very accessible to music production and final score
publication using JAWS.

Windows systems are not much cheaper if you include office. But my Macd
experience is limited. But if I had to start over, I would go with the Mac,
the cleaner set up is very nice, no tower. But in a year or two who knows
what will be the best.
Another advantage is anti virus, but if you did internet and email in linux

Hi Lorin
If you have the choice, I would go with the Mac system. Upgrades and
software are cheap. And once you buy an application, you get the upgrades
with no cost. The last operating system upgrade cost $29. Many totally
blind do well with Voice over, the Mac screen reader. But a more powerful
screen reader is available for the Mac for $250.
For an exttra $100. you can get all the one on one training you want in one
hour sessions for a year.
In our area the training is good, but I saw emails where the training is not
good.
Once you learn it, you will save money, and the hardware seems to be very
drillable.

Yes, and the other problem with mac, is that if you get an app wich is
not accessible, usually there is not much you can do about it, wile in
windows you can at least try with the jaws cursor and click on things
and many times it does work. So there is more flexability.

Re: Windows 8 and MS Office XP

Hi, Tracy.
I'm not sure if MS Office XP will work with Win8, but I think the ribbon is
here to stay.
What is it about the ribbon that gives you trouble?
More Later,
Dani

Good morning list:

I will be updating to Windows 8, but am tired of trying to work with the
ribbons in Office 2007. Will MS Office XP work on Windows 8 using Jaws 12?

Thanks in advance.

Windows systems are not much cheaper if you include office. But my Macd
experience is limited. But if I had to start over, I would go with the Mac,
the cleaner set up is very nice, no tower. But in a year or two who knows
what will be the best.
Another advantage is anti virus, but if you did internet and email in linux
you would have the same advantage.

John, this is all very well, but Windows systems are cheaper, and in my
experience there are more inaccessible apps on the mac.
Cheers

In our area the training is good, but I saw emails where the training is not
good.
Once you learn it, you will save money, and the hardware seems to be very
drillable.

Hi,

Would Jaws 12 or 13 work with Windows 7 and has anyone used Windows 8 with
Jaws 14?

I have to buy a new laptop and wonder which OS I should buy or switch to an
Apple where I don't have to shell out money for upgrades of software like
Jaws, but can't afford any less accessibility as I am totally blind.

Any advice please, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Lauren

Dave...

Yes, unfortunately. Especially with Microsoft Excel. You'll need to learn some alternate keystrokes using the Windows key in many cases.

I've sometimes wanted to take a hammer to some of my computer hardware, but I've never wanted to drill into it. It must be a Mac thing.

Re: Windows 8 and MS Office XP

Russell,

That's not at all surprising. I presume it's from personal experience?

Windows 8 wasn't available for testing when JAWS 12 was in construction and
revisions I suspect.
