Yes. You can. Go to control panel. search for performance. Hit
enter on performance information and tools. Then, again on adjust
visual settings. Set it to adjust for best performance. Hit apply,
then OK. Now your done! You won't have your desktop in the alt tab
list, nor will there be a flip 3d list when hitting windows tab. Hope
that helps.

Hello, as a new-be to the group, I wonder if anyone is still using
Anytime Deluxe Day planner with newer JAWS versions? I know there are
"DLee" scripts for Anytime Deluxe 7, which is terribly old, but it was
the calendar program that was so easy to use with JAWS. Besides
OUutlook, which I haven't afforded yet, I wondered if installing the
old Anytime 7, along with the JAWS "DLee" scripts would still work
with JAWS 14? THANKS for anyone's help...Struggling with keeping
track of appointments, & thank-you for this totally helpful chat!
Peace!

Re: Federal Circuit Court affirmed the US Patent Office Decisioninvalidating Freedom Scientific's patent and eliminating theirclaims against GW Micro

Adrian Spratt

Gary,

Thanks for posting this link. When I followed it, I reached a plain search
page. However, if you just fill "freedom scientific" in the case name, you
bring up the link to the recording of the oral argument.

The first lawyer up is the one representing FS. I found it hard to follow
his line of argument, probably because he was relying heavily on the briefs
and the record of the patent proceeding. I realize some will ascribe a less
flattering reason. The lawyer for GW makes the case much clearer for those
of us who are unfamiliar with the briefs.

Whatever your feelings about litigation in this area or the merits of this
specific case, GW's lawyer helps me understand the technology behind
screenreaders better than I had before. That alone could make this recording
worth the time.

Subject: Federal Circuit Court affirmed the US Patent Office Decision
invalidating Freedom Scientific's patent and eliminating their claims
against GW Micro

In July of 2008 on my first day back in the office after the Sight Village
conference, someone entered our office and handed me a summons and
notification of a lawsuit brought on by Freedom Scientific against GW Micro.
They received a patent for certain screen reader features and our response
was that Window-Eyes had those same basic features several years prior to
their patent. This was the beginning of a long waste of time and money,
which finally came to a close last week. GW Micro is vindicated - it's over
- the court decided in our favor!

I won't provide all the details but in general, the Patent Office reexamined
their patent at our request and found it to be invalid in view of prior art.
Both the patent examiner and the Board of Appeals in the Patent Office came
to the same conclusion - the patent is invalid. Despite those results, they
asked for a federal court to review the decision and again they came to the
same conclusion as everyone else. You may listen to this final argument by
going to
http://www.cafc.uscourts.gov/oral-argument-recordings/search/audio.html
search for Appeal 2012-1145, listen to the MP3 file and you will easily come
to the same conclusion as everyone else. Their original patent should not
have been granted in the first place and without the patent, there are no
grounds for their lawsuit against GW Micro. If you decide to listen to that
file, you should be aware that it is a large file, which will take some time
to download.

We want to thank you all for the many words of encouragement, support and
prayers that we've received over these past 4 years. Not one person ever
suggested that we should do anything other than fight and defend ourselves.
However, the sad fact is that actions like this hurt all of us. This caused
a waste of dollars and time for both our companies, which could have been
spent improving existing products and developing new ones.

GW Micro chooses to take the path of creating new products, features and
innovations and our recent release of our Window-Eyes 8 public beta
illustrates that perfectly. If you haven't done so already, I hope you will
give it a try. Simply doing that will show your support of GW Micro. We
promise to continue to work hard and conduct business in an honest and
proper fashion. The reputation of GW Micro will never be litigation instead
of innovation.

New Screen reader?

Ari Damoulakis <aridamoulakis@...>

Hi everyone
Since I'm crossposting, may I also add to my friends in America that I
hope you are all keeping safe and doing ok with the hurricane.
Now my question is, I'm curious, but I never knew about this
apparrently new screen reader until hearing about it on another list
yesterday. Have I been out of the loop, how long has this existed? Has
anyone heard of this product? Could this be competition for jaws etc,
especially if it might be developed further (the site doesn't make
this point clear). Is it good?

Thanks
Ari

Joseph:
This is extremely helpful. Too bad this information wasn't on the Freedom Scientific Website, but I guess that's one reasons we have lists like this.
I think I'll check out, for my own edification, exactly what an ARM tablet is.
I suspect it has nothing to do with Arm, the U.K. company that makes really expensive software used by chip designers in setting up wafer design when sending to foundries.

Hi Ed,
I'll answer RT question first before going into different flavors of Win8:
Windows RT is designed for ARM tablets. This means that you cannot use JAWS
because: first, RT does not allow desktop apps, and second, any X86/X64
programs will not run on ARM CPU's (for which JAWS qualifies). Also, JAWS
does not support touch screen gestures (for now).
As for differences between Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro: think of differences
between Windows XP Home versus Professional, or differences between Windows
7 Home Premium versus Ultimate. Windows 8 (standard version) replaces
Windows 7 Home series, thus it targets home users. Windows 8 Pro combines
Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate and is designed for power users and
businesses. There is one another edition called Windows 8 Enterprise
designed for corporate users.
As for JAWS compatibility and upgrades:
* If you are using Windows 7 or earlier and are using JAWS 13 and 14, remove
JAWS 13 and its video intercept driver before upgrading to Windows 8.
* I assume JAWS pro license will work on Windows 8 standard/Pro/Enterprise
whereas JAWS standard license covers Windows 8 standard.
Cheers,
Joseph

A complete overhaul was done to this script and some assistance was greatly
appreciated by JHaken Anderson for providing a set of scripts to help
improve the Spotify Blind scripts. Believe me, it works way better with the
improvements and the guides and hotkeys were updated.

Download here:

Also, the source was released as well for translators and developers.

Have fun!

I use avast for virus protection.
It is becoming almost totally inaccessible.
Also, I have been getting some kind of weird error when I try to open the
program to run a scan; yet, it says my system is secure. It also loads
updates every time I am logged in.
Any thoughts?

I do not know why when I go into IE with google as my home page, it says

Yet, when I try to go there and do that, nothing happens. What is this

What version of jaws are you using? Either way, blackboard has gotten
more accessible, you will be provided the blackboard link to your
school by your school, and if you go there you will be required to
sign in with your username and password also assigned by your school.
The easiest way to nevigate it in my opinion is using the letter (H)
which will have jaws read off headings. For instance, announcements is
one of the headings, under this heading, any announcements from your
enrolled courses would show up here. There's also an organization one,
that's if you're enrolled in any and then you have the courses heading
which will list your classes. Press enter on your class and you will
be taken to its homepage. Then I like to use the letter (L) giving you
lists and on my page its the fourth one that will give you areas you
can visit on your specific class page such as syllabus, content (which
will have readings and stuff unless your professor creates more
categories) and once you click on what area you desire, jaws might
stay where you clicked, but be assured that the category has shown up
at the bottom of the page so you can use the letter (H) to get to that
section.

I believe this is a lot for now, but take it easy and if you have more
questions over time, don't hesitate to ask. Goodluck!

Hi,
I'm trying to get things going with my Windows 7 computer.
, Jaws doesn't read it, except very sporadically.

By that, I mean occasionally you hear a country.

If anyone has a suggestion to try I would welcome it.

Otherwise, I will have to wait for sighted assistance.

I've been looking for any help on what might make Windows 7 work better with

Jaws.

Crystal
I have Word XP installed, but need to activate it.

On the page that wants to know the country, which is a combo box, I can not

get Jaws to read the selection.

I can not use down arrow after pressing enter.

If I use alt plus down arrow to show the list

Although I have not used it my partenr and her friends are using it every
night to chat whilst playing games etc. Seems to work really well. Not
sure how much setting it up it takes though.

Hi Crystal
Are you meaning that jaws isn't working with the Word XP or with the
whole Windows 7? If its the whole Windows 7, is the version of jaws
you have high enough for it? I mean, I think you need jaws 10 at least
for win 7. If its the Word, as far as I've heard the new jaws doesn't
support old office suites properly? Sorry I can't help you further,
maybe you'll have to wait for sighted help, but strange jaws doesn't
perform properly. Maybe also try restart and see if it works better,
or try with NVDA.
Ari

Morning,

I have a computer here that I just installed windows 7, Jaws 13 and office
2010 on. When in the outlook list view and when I delete a message either
with the delete key or ctrl-d there is a very long pause and for a moment I
will get a outlook is not responding message. Email is set up as imap so I
am thinking that might be at issue. Thoughts?

Shawn,

Pretty cool, John. I'm working now, and don't have time to give it, but
I'm intrigued. I might give it a try, even over my humble dial-up.

Difficult. My experience is small but from what others have told me only
the
E-mail section is truly accessible. I asked a cohort of mine how he handled
Blackboard when he was in school and he replied: "Made allot of sighted
friends." Another told me that they had some success using only the arrow
keys for navigation. However, I discovered that they were using a different
system instead of Blackboard.

y college also uses JAWS and I have had no problems accessing it. I do use
the H key for heading navigation and the arrow keys a lot, but i don't have
any problems accessing any of the features with JAWS.

Hi All,

I just installed Jaws 14 and I can't remember how to change certain
settings. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

I have a terminal emulator application called passport. In prior
versions of Jaws, when I pressed the delete key I could hear the
character(s) being deleted. In Jaws 14 I hear only the word "delete."
I have already checked the option to differentiate between the
keypads, but this hasn't made any difference. I am having this same
problem in other applications too.

Also, I would like to silence the key labels for certain keys such as
the enter key.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks,
Kim

Okay, what that did was when I changed the setting to "highlighted",
when I press the delete key, rather than hearing the character being
deleted I am hearing the remainder of the line/word spoken. That's
somewhat better than hearing only the word "delete" but still not
ideal.

Thanks George.

At the risk of asking a stupid question, does the problem exist in
unprotected view? I'll follow this thread closely, because that would
make 14 unusable in this office.

I had that very same issue yesterday, and I went into the trust center and
unchecked the boxes for protected view and I was able to read it.

Hello,
I am using word 2010 with j14 918.
In the last version, 13, I could perfectly navigate in a protected view
documents. So now it seems impossible to do. Some of you can reproduce this
problem?
Best,
Juan.

Hi,
I just installed JAWS 14 and the Vocalizer voices on my Toshiba Satellite
A505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium; it's a 64-bit machine with an
Intel I7 processor and 6 gigs of RAM. Although I haven't explored all the
new bells and whistles yet, I gotta say that JAWS 14 is running nicely and
the Vocalizer voices are really snappy. I'd almost go so far as to say that
it rocks! I'm really diggin' the hell out of it.

By contrast, I have a 6-year-old Dell 5150 desktop running Windows XP Home
with a Pentium IV CPU rated at 3.40GHZ with 2 gigs of RAM. Has anybody tried
JAWS 14 on an older XP box with similar specs? How did it perform? I'd
really like to put JAWS 14 on the XP box if I can get away with it, but I
don't want to bog the thing down. What do you all think? Should I go for
it?

Tom

Gerry, if you have your copy of the version of the DVD that is on your
system, you should have the alpha numeric code on the jacket of the
disk. that will help you get back your authorization if you loose it.

If you don't have any more installations, you can always contact
Freedom Scientific and get a reset of your number of installation.
There is usually no charge for this.

So, go ahead and do whatever you intend to do to fix or get
stabilization of your machine.

I understand about the code and all that. I had the names of the files to
get off of the computer then do the restore and put them back. It worked
before and is just way much easier than trying to explain why you need a
reset of authorization again and then you have to hear the complaints that
you should get a dongle if you are going to need reset that often. It's
just way better to be independent than having to ask for something that is
rightfully yours.

You don't lose the authorization if the locking code no changes. In other
words: is the licence come corrupt, you can reactivate the software without

burn a key.

What 2 files do you need to save to not loose a authorization key for jaws?

Computer not acting right so I want to try some things and want to try not

Here's something I sent out several months ago.

Installing JAWS and Not Burn a Key

This is relevant to Windows XP, so your folder names may be different. Also

this is only a suggested process and the author will not assume any
liability if it does not work as advertised on your system. But others have

used it with success. If there are steps you don't understand then this
process may not be appropriate for you to attempt without help from someone

with a bit more computer expertise.

PREPARATION
We assume that right now you are not operating in 40-minute mode. Before you

make any changes to your system you must preserve two folders on another
drive or partition so you can copy them later. Do this now while you're
thinking about it. Doing this after you've made changes is useless.

1. Open C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific
2. Copy the folder called 'activator'
3. Paste this folder to some other drive on your computer or an external
backup drive to keep it safe.
4. Do the same for the folder 'authorization'.
5. Now you will have these two folders preserved for when you need them
later. Don't lose them or forget where you put them.
6. If you have some sort of archiving software or a synchronization
software, set it up so that these two folders are automatically backed up.
Then you don't even need to think about them.

UPDATING JAWS
If you update your version of JAWS it is recommended you recopy these two
folders after the install is complete. Again if you use an automatic backup

process you don't need to worry about this step.

Preserving Your Activation Key
Follow these steps if you are ever confronted with the message to
re-authorize your installation of JAWS. This can occur if you change some
hardware, or
add a drive or RAM. Of course if you have plenty of keys available* it may
not be an issue for you, but if you're down to 1 or 0 and it's Friday
evening and FS is closed for the weekend, then you'll benefit.

* See "How to Find Out the Number of Keys You Have" below for a process to
determine your remaining keys.

1. Be sure to be running the newest version of JAWS when you restart your
computer. If you don't, the activation may not cover all versions you have
installed. So if you have version 9, 11, and 12 installed, be sure to boot
using JAWS 12.
2. If or when the activation dialog comes up, cancel out of the dialog.
3. Copy the two folders 'activator' and 'authorization' from your backup
drive.
4. Paste both to the C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific folder.
5. Allow all files to be overwritten.
6. Reboot your computer.

CAVEATS
This should work as long as you do so on the same machine (computer). It is

not known to work if you try to paste these two folders onto the C: drive of

a different computer. That would obviously violate the whole purpose of the

keys -- to prevent JAWS from being installed on too many computers.

How to Find Out the Number of Keys You Have

This procedure is provided courtesy of Freedom Scientific Technical
Support.

1. Go to http://www.fsactivate.com
2. Click on the continue product activation button.
3. Down arrow to: Verify the number of activation keys available for your
Freedom Scientific product and press enter.
4. Down arrow to serial number and again down arrow to edit.
5. Type in your JAWS serial number and press enter on the submit button.
6. Underneath the first seven digits of the authorization number, you will
find the number of keys remaining.
7. You can request a reset of your activation keys by filling out and
submitting a form.

Hi Hamid,
I have no idea what the underlying problem is here, since it seems like a
regular form field, but I tried all the little tricks I know and I could
not
enter a date either.
I tried in both Internet Explorer 8 and in FireFox. I tried going into the
form and then hitting alt spacebar and then x to maximize the field (which
I
found sometimes helps); I tried turning auto forms on and off; I tried
using
the JAWS cursor to focus on the date that was pre-filled, and moving it to
the spot just after the digit I wanted to change, and then routing the pc
cursor to the JAWS cursor to delete and enter the digit I wanted.
All of this was a no go.
I did manage to enter one date, but the cursor had jumped to the wrong
field, so I was in the arrival not departure field, and I could not then
change it.
It seems as though there's some kind of auto-fill at work here that doesn't
work well with JAWS.
Maybe someone could look at the code and see what's going on there.
It is a mystery!
I'd also send a note to customer support, and maybe it will get routed to
the right person.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but at least I replicated the problem!

Hi
I am using JFW 13 with IE 8

I did manage to do what you are after, below is how I did it.

after each step I went to the top of the page then went back to the
box I just worked on.

1. loaded the page http://www.bookingbuddy.com/vacation.php?arrival_city=

2. went to the from: edit box
already in the box was, Melbourne, Australia (MEL)
I hit enter for forms mode, highlighted this & deleted it
typed in brisbane, after a few seconds the page refreshed & now has
in it, Brisbane, Australia (BNE)

3. whent to the to: edit box, typed in Sydney, again in a few seconds
page refreshed & now in the edit box is Sydney, Australia (SYD)

4. went to the depart edit box, did not hit enter on the edit box I
prest up arrow once & landed on the word, depart: & hit enter on this,
this then refreshed the page & opened a table with the days & dates,
I went to the top of the page prest t & landed on the table, then
prest up arrow & this told me what month the table was displaying, it
was november
I prest up arrow again & found a next button & above that is a prev button,
these will take you to the next month or to the prev month.
once you have chosen your month, the table displays the days across
the top & the dates down the columns
hit enter on the date you want & this will then show up in the depart
edit box. I chose Sunday the second of december
this showed up in the edit box as, 12/02/2012

5. then I down arrowed to the next box that is, Departure Time
I prest enter on the combo box & then prest alt down arrow to open it,
then down arrowed till I got to the time I wanted to leave, 10am
then I prest alt up arrow to close the combo box,
now this box said, departure time combo box 10am

6. I prest down arrow to the word, return: & hit enter on it
this then opened the table again with the dates on it, the month now
was December
I went across to Friday, then down to 21 & hit enter on it
now the return edit box displays, 12/21/2012

good luck
Hope this helps.

Hello All,

I started experiencing a problem with my Windows Explorer the other day.
When I go to bring up a file, the file may or may not open. But when I alt
tab back to the documents folder and try to arrow around jaws does not say
the name of the files. It is like they are not there. When jaws is off,
and a sighted person looks at the screen, they see the files and can access
them. I contacted FS and they told me to download JAWS 14 which I did, but
I still have the same problem. I have windows 7, 64 bit, and jaws 14.
Any
help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Cathy
