Hello, everyone: I am a Jaws user, using the most recent build of Jaws 13. I
am finding when I open internet explorer 8 often Jaws goes silent for a
while wile loading a web page. It usually comes back, but occasionally it
does not, and the computer freezes up, not allowing me to do anything,
necessitating a forced shut down. I am using windows Xp, with an old delll
computer. Any ideas as to what might be happening would be most appreciated.
Thank you.

Re: J-say and dragon

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

You do not need J-Say. J-Say makes training easier, and does add to the convenience of using Dragon Naturally Speaking, but it is NOT necessary.
Also, if the Dragon Naturally Speaking is older than Version 11.5, the transfer is valuable mainly to give you a discount on the upgrade to version 12.0
I personally think the advances in Naturally Speaking in 11.5 are so great that you would be wasting your time with anything earlier.

Honestly it shouldn't matter whether your ISP supports it or not.
Jaws supporting your chosen client is far more important.

WLM does take some getting used to but once you do it is quite usable.

Good Afternoon.

Just writing with a video card enquiry.

A radio station I'm volunteering for is looking to purchase a new pc.

The pc has a ATI HD7770 1 GB graphics card in it, I presume on-board.

Does anyone know if this will work with jaws?

Thanks in advance for any info you are able to provide.

Chatting with Facebook Friends

Rick Miller

Dear Listers:

I am trying to use JAWS to set up AIM to chat with my Facebook friends and am having a terrible time. I have gone online and have tried to follow the instructions I have run across, but nothing seems to be helping. So now I'm turning to all of you with the hope that someone can give me the advice and the help I need.

First of all, before I begin, I'd like to tell you that I am using JAWS 13, Windows XP and Internet Explorer 8. I begin having problems the minute I try to go to the www.aim.com web site. When the web site pops up, so does the Internet Explorer information bar. I have turned the information bar off by going to Internet Options, but it still keeps popping up. I can't figure out what to do to stop it from popping up.

I have managed to go to the page where the options of how to proceed with AIM pop up. I only want to use AIM to chat with my Facebook friends, so I have opted not to allow it to do such things as control my Facebook friends, control my messages, control my news feeds, etc., etc. Then after I have made these options I cannot find the link to continue to the next step. The one time I did I found myself on the Lifestream page, but could not find my buddy list. Sometimes I have gotten a notice that my browser is not supported. Do you know if Internet Explorer 8 is compatible with AIM? Could that be the reason why nothing is working?

There is another annoying thing that has been happening which I can't figure out how to stop. Ever since I downloaded AIM version 7.5 (the version of AIM I am using), every time I boot up my computer Internet Explorer 8 automatically loads the AOL main page in spite of the fact that AOL is not my home page. Do any of you know if there is a way I can stop this from happening?

Thank you listers for any help you can give.

Sincerely,

Rick Miller

Problem After the logon screen

Fred Quick <techpro4u@...>

Hello listers,

I just installed the latest build of Jaws13 64bit on a Zenbook running Win7
pro64bit. When I power on, Jaws speaks the logon screen. I select a user,
type in the password. After pressing enter, Windows loads and Jaws is not
running. I've selected all of the proper settings for Jaws to run after
logon for all users. I've tried various ways to run Jaws from the desktop,
hotkey and the run dialog but no go!
Now when I shut down the computer, Jaws starts to say something just before
Windows shuts down.
Any suggestions to correct this would be appreciated.

Fred

He was able to use WP12 successfully.
He also tried JAWS13 with equal success.
We believe that there is something about my XP Dell 2008 system--Perhaps an old video driver.
He can use WP x6 with JAWS14, but he believes X6 won't run on my XP system.
It may be safe to use JAWS14 with WordPerfect but not yet for me.

Will my standard jaws licence work with Windows 8 release preview or would I

Re: serial number

Richard Holloway

We only bought about seven years ago, Started with version 9.

Serial number with that buy was six digits, 43x,xxx.

Most companies with most long-lived serialized products make various changes along the way to the numbering schemes. It is really hard with a handful of developers and a few cases of your product ready to tell what you'll need to do with the serial numbers 20 years down the road... Security issues and needs change and so forth. The concept of a site license may have never come up yet, etc.

Sometimes batches are run numerically out-of sequence. Sometimes huge chunks of numbers are skipped over. Sometimes multiple sets of numbers are run in separate sequence groups (to break apart consumers, from educators, from government. Sometimes a single number may be a site license for dozens, hundreds, or even more users. Companies don't announce this.

The numbers are interesting, and surely a number likes James's must go way back to a simpler time for FS, I wouldn't be at all surprised if James bought the 11xxth copy sold. I would be very surprised if I bought the 43x,000th copy.

Cheers.

Was your first version 4.2?

IF this is the scheme, then FS allowed for up to 1000 new users per
version,

and might change the serial prefix with each new version. We'd have
to collect a fair number of serial numbers to be sure of this.

Well, we could make a guess by serial numbers.

My jaws serial number is about 427400 and I purchased jaws in late
2007 if memory serves.

I am pretty sure FS does in fact use incremental SN, not some odd
pattern with lots of holes. If we had someone who is a very recent
purchaser we could get an idea about both the overall population as
well as how fast it is growing.

There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the US classified as
legally blind, but only a small fraction, perhaps less than 10% use
computers with screen readers. The overwhelming majority of blind
people do not use computers, so the actual number of JAWS users is
probably quite small. Also, an estimated 70% of blind people are
unemployed, so they would have little or no means of acquiring
computers or commercial screen readers. And the vast majority of
JAWS users do not belong to this or other blind-tech related
mailing lists, so they would have no way of learning about the
petition. FS keeps the number of JAWS customers a closely guarded
secret, so nobody really knows how many blind people are actually
using it. But if I had to venture a guess, I would say that the
number of JAWS users might be somewhere between 50,000 and 150,000,
but this is only a wild guess not based on any facts or evidence.

Subject: Freedom Scientific Petition

All:
As promised, I am about to put the Freedom Scientific "Gimmick
Feature Moratorium" petition up on the Internet. Before doing so,
I have a couple of questions:

1. The Change.org petition form suggests (perhaps requires) a
sign-up goal. I'd be interested in suggestions as to the number
of JAWS users that should sign such a petition to be considered a
success. One of those helping with the drafting of the petition
has information that two thirds of all blind persons use JAWS.
Does anyone have any idea how many people that is? What would be
a reasonable percentage of signers to expect? Looking for
suggestions here. I'm happy to accept responses off-line. Although
this is JAWS-related, I don't want to spark a flurry of off-topic
discussions
again.
2. Change.org is, to my way of thinking, a little awkward when it
comes to screen reader usage. It isn't bad, but there are some
less than intuitive prompts. I would like this petition to be on
the most accessible public petition Website possible. Would
anyone on the list perhaps know of a site for a public petition
that is better and/or more accessible than is Change.org?
Thanks to the off-line support and drafting assistance. We've
tried to accommodate the views expressed on this list and
elsewhere even though, in some instances, the interests were not
always
congruent.
In the petition, we have not cited specific issues. I actually
started to do that, but I wanted to get the petition up before
Christmas. <SMILE> Thanks for all your help!

3 One of the options was just to reply to the invitation; which I did.

4 The other option was to go to a address on yahoo; which I did.

5 On that page it said if I thought it was taking too long to write to the
list owner. After 4 days I wrote to the owner.

6 The invitation was good for only a week. It has been ten days and I have

heard nothing other than the first invitation. I hope someone on this list

has some words of wisdom.

Thanks,Dave Maynard

Re: Where is the Open Book List?

David Maynard <dmaynard35@...>

Hi Mike;

What you suggested is exactly what I did in step 1 of my message. I got the one week invitation as I said in step 2 and that is the last I have heard. Is there an active "owner"?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi;

Does anyone know what has happened to the OpenBook users list on yahoo? I
changed isp and can't get back on the list. I did all the usual things but
can not get subscribed.

1 I asked to subscribe.

2 I got a reply with was an invitation giving me two ways to confirm I
