David Ferrin, who moderates both the JAWS Users and Blind Computing lists, is very strict about adherence to list rules, and will not hesitate to ban anyone who violates them. Apparently, your announcement of the FS petition violates the Blind Computing list rules and you have thus been banned by the aforementioned moderator.

All:
As I'm sure many of you remember, I spearheaded the petition drive to get Freedom Scientific to pay attention to users and fix bugs that have persisted in JAWS. It has been up about a week, and the number of signers has been steadily growing.
I was expecting to see a post on the Blind Computing List. When it didn't show up, I decided to post a notice about the petition and invite people to check it out. My message is at the bottom of this message.
I subscribe to the Blind Computing list (and I know several of you also participate on it) only by digest. So, I see messages grouped in batches.
Here is the only message I have received from the Blind Computing list since inviting listers to check out the Freedom Scientific petition:

Subject: You have been unsubscribed from the Blind-Computing mailing list

JAWS, for the present, is still working, but don't be surprised if the next time you hear from me it will be using Window-Eyes, NVDA, System Access, or whatever -- and it won't be my choice!
Here is the message which appears to have resulted in my getting kicked off the Blind Computing mailing list -- without any warning or any stated reason:

Hi All:

For anyone who uses, has used, or is thinking of using the JAWS Screen reader or other Freedom Scientific products, I urge you to read through and consider signing an online petition asking Freedom Scientific to give increased attention to fixing the bugs in its software and to take greater in introducing new features that tend to break functionality that previously worked. The text of The petition spells out some more specifics and may be worth considering. I, along with several others, authored the petition.
I also urge anyone who cares about making sure that blind and visually impaired people have access to reliable and dependable products seriously to consider reading and signing the petition.
If this has been mentioned before on this list, I apologize. I get the list by digest and sometimes miss posts.
Making our voices heard is one way to keep pressure on companies like Freedom Scientific to keep making their
products better by not letting known problems persist.

Firefox and Youtube

William Sallander <wsallander@...>

I've been playing around with the latest version of Firefox which appears to be version 16.
I've noticed that when using Jaws beta 14 and earlier, when I go to the YouTube site, Firefox seems to hang or crash.
This problem doesn't seem to occur when using another screen reader such as NVDA.
As I said earlier I have noticed this issue with earlier versions of Jaws and earlier versions of Firefox.
I'm using a vista machine, 64 bit.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
Call me naïve here but we don’t necessarily have a lot of facts to go on. Perhaps before accusations start flying a note to that lists moderator might be in order. It would also be interesting to know if messages about online petitions are considered on topic for said messages I.E. do they violate the list guidelines if any are indeed established therein.
Has the lists server experienced any glitches of late which might have resulted in this message having been disseminated. Are you actually unsubscribed or was it just an erroneous message?
Case and point in recent days the list dedicated to bookshare have been sending out some unusual messages due to some server difficulties.
It is my understanding that the maker of JFW does not officially run any user email lists. with that being said I’d be curious then whom would then be doing or have need to participate in any retaliatory activity.
Just some thoughts offered in the name of clarity and having all information before drawing conclusions and making assertions therein.
Robin

Maryann, you might begin with the Jaws training materials. Dropbox is
self-explanatory, and very accessible--simply follow the prompts.
Additionally, you could google training for blind computer users or some
variation thereof. As well, the online help for most of these applications
has accessability information. These suggestions are by no means
all-inclusive but will certainly give you a good starting point and likely
several years of study.

I started with JAWS for DOS. My number starts with 83 and has remained the
same, even with the transition to JAWS for Windows. It doesn't look like
the theory that the lower your serial number, the earlier you started using
JAWS is true. I also remember when you had to have an external speech
synthesizer to use JAWS, or any other screen reader. Now, thank goodness,
you can use your sound card.

I think I started with version 3.something.

No, I started using jaws during the transition period between jfw8 and 9.
I
have had several SMAs in the meantime as well as purchasing the remote
access option, but my SN has not changed.

Was your first version 4.2?

IF this is the scheme, then FS allowed for up to 1000 new users per
version,

and might change the serial prefix with each new version. We'd have
to collect a fair number of serial numbers to be sure of this.

Well, we could make a guess by serial numbers.

My jaws serial number is about 427400 and I purchased jaws in late
2007 if memory serves.

I am pretty sure FS does in fact use incremental SN, not some odd
pattern with lots of holes. If we had someone who is a very recent
purchaser we could get an idea about both the overall population as
well as how fast it is growing.

I wonder if FS would release the number of licences or users they
have sold. Do we know how many Jaws users there are?

There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the US classified as
legally blind, but only a small fraction, perhaps less than 10% use
computers with screen readers. The overwhelming majority of blind
people do not use computers, so the actual number of JAWS users is
probably quite small. Also, an estimated 70% of blind people are
unemployed, so they would have little or no means of acquiring
computers or commercial screen readers. And the vast majority of
JAWS users do not belong to this or other blind-tech related
mailing lists, so they would have no way of learning about the
petition. FS keeps the number of JAWS customers a closely guarded
secret, so nobody really knows how many blind people are actually
using it. But if I had to venture a guess, I would say that the
number of JAWS users might be somewhere between 50,000 and 150,000,
but this is only a wild guess not based on any facts or evidence.

Subject: Freedom Scientific Petition

All:
As promised, I am about to put the Freedom Scientific "Gimmick
Feature Moratorium" petition up on the Internet. Before doing so,
I have a couple of questions:

1. The Change.org petition form suggests (perhaps requires) a
sign-up goal. I'd be interested in suggestions as to the number
of JAWS users that should sign such a petition to be considered a
success. One of those helping with the drafting of the petition
has information that two thirds of all blind persons use JAWS.
Does anyone have any idea how many people that is? What would be
a reasonable percentage of signers to expect? Looking for
suggestions here. I'm happy to accept responses off-line. Although
this is JAWS-related, I don't want to spark a flurry of off-topic
discussions
again.
2. Change.org is, to my way of thinking, a little awkward when it
comes to screen reader usage. It isn't bad, but there are some
less than intuitive prompts. I would like this petition to be on
the most accessible public petition Website possible. Would
anyone on the list perhaps know of a site for a public petition
that is better and/or more accessible than is Change.org?
Thanks to the off-line support and drafting assistance. We've
tried to accommodate the views expressed on this list and
elsewhere even though, in some instances, the interests were not
always
congruent.
In the petition, we have not cited specific issues. I actually
started to do that, but I wanted to get the petition up before
Christmas. <SMILE> Thanks for all your help!

I noticed when I'm not in the winamp window it'll sometimes read part of the track. For example the other night I was listening to the song Where I come from. I wasn't even in the winamp window and, it read it as, Where I come F. Then it read the length of the track.

Hi Dave,

thanks for the advise I'll try this at work tomorrow to. Hopefully this or
the other suggestions I've had will get it working otherwise it's a mystery
game when I send an email as to whether it will make any sense to the
recipient!

Paul,

I had a similar problem with my Windows Mail. It not only did not read the
message body reliably, but also would not report the status bar.

The way I solved it was to have Windows Mail open, and then close and reload
JAWS 14. It worked fine after that, and I didn't have to perform that step
again.

I'm thinking that JAWS 14 needed to wake up and acquire the window
dimensions and parameters and store them in some sort of default cache.

At least that's my layman's impression.

Hi,

I'm running the beta 2 jaws 14 at work using xp and outlook 2003. When I
go to type a new message or reply jaws reads the to, cc, subject fields all
fine but then when I go to the message jaws announces 'message but won't
read any text from the message such as my signature, I can type
text and hear the typing echo as I type but then can't go back and review
or hear any of the text I have written its like I'm in a blank email. Has
anyone else had this problem?

works.. it would make sense since it is only on outgoing emails I send and
not on incoming emails.

I've had similar problems reading table-based messages. It's as though I'm
viewing a blank page with the up and down arrow keys pingging everytime I
attempt to manipulate them.

Have you checked your text field settings. It may have defaulted to html as
opposed to plain text? If not, try restoring your system back to an earlier
point - preferably back to a day or so before the problem occured.

If you need help doing this, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Best

Philip

Re: Stopping windows from popping in browser

Dave...

Steve,

There may be more than one reason why the page is refreshing. Chris'
instructions will help to stop with automatic updates, but I think that if
the page is designed to change based on a selection in a combo list or
drop-down list, then it will update as soon as you tab away from that
element. And I don't think there's a way to prevent it, since it needs to
change the page at that point to be contextually-relevant.

Those are the pages that usually throw the virtual cursor off somewhere in
the weeds, requiring that you once again navigate to where you intended to
be.

I have an application whose control panel contains an ever-changing
Web page, displayed in my browser of choice. The refresh rate is every
five seconds, unchangeable. Didn't there used to be, or, is there
still, a way in JAWS to ignore the ever-popping-up window and freeze
the thing to give you enough time to get at whatever you need to get
at in there? If so, what is it?
