Re: copy script to older version of Jaws

Scripts that have been compiled (the .jsb files) with jaws 13 can not
be used with earlier versions. However .jsb files from earlier
versions can be used with jfw13.

And none of his prevents you from copying the script source files and
re-compiling them with the earlier version.

Re: using jaws and talking to a person through the same headset

Dave...

Not cheap, but you need a headset that's not off-the-rack. You need two
completely separate monaural signals and one microphone return.

Plantronics makes a couple specially designed for that purpose, one
connecting via USB+headset, the other connecting via telephone+headset.

Hello,

I am wondering please what is the cheapest, simplest way to setup a headset
with a built in mike that will enable me for sure, to hear a customer
properly in say only the left ear wile talking to them through the mike and
with that same headset also hear properly and loud enough Jaws in only the
right ear, so I can handle properly and quickly inbound customer service
inquiries using a laptop computer and the internet? Is there maybe a small
external box I can buy that I would plug into my computer and then plug the
headset into this small external box that will enable me to hear a customer
in only the left ear and also hear jaws only in the right ear of that same
headset?
Any help with this would be so very much appreciated. Much thanks in
advance.

Deb and the girls

You have to have a special dual headset. You hear the computer in one ear and the caller in the other.
I have worked for Citibank for 31 years now and that is how it is best done.

your first version 4.2?

IF this is the scheme, then FS allowed for up to 1000 new users per

to
collect a fair number of serial numbers to be sure of this.

Well, we could make a guess by serial numbers.

My jaws serial number is about 427400 and I purchased jaws in late
2007 if memory serves.

I am pretty sure FS does in fact use incremental SN, not some odd
pattern with lots of holes. If we had someone who is a very recent
purchaser we could get an idea about both the overall population as
well as how fast it is growing.

There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the US classified as
legally blind, but only a small fraction, perhaps less than 10%

blind people do not use computers, so the actual number of JAWS
users is probably quite small. Also, an estimated 70% of blind
people are unemployed, so they would have little or no means of
acquiring computers or commercial screen readers. And the vast
majority of JAWS users do not belong to this or other blind-tech
related
mailing
lists, so they would have no way of learning about the petition.
FS
keeps the number of JAWS customers a closely guarded secret, so
nobody really knows how many blind people are actually using it.
But
if I had to venture a guess, I would say that the number of JAWS
users might be somewhere between 50,000 and 150,000, but this is
only a wild guess not based on any facts or evidence.

Subject: Freedom Scientific Petition

All:
As promised, I am about to put the Freedom Scientific "Gimmick
Feature Moratorium" petition up on the Internet. Before doing
so, I have a couple of questions:

1. The Change.org petition form suggests (perhaps requires) a
sign-up goal. I'd be interested in suggestions as to the number
of
JAWS users that should sign such a petition to be considered a
success. One of those helping with the drafting of the petition
has information that two thirds of all blind persons use JAWS.
Does anyone have any idea how many people that is? What would be
a
reasonable percentage of signers to expect? Looking for
suggestions
here. I'm happy to accept responses off-line. Although this is
JAWS-related, I don't want to spark a flurry of off-topic
discussions
again.
2. Change.org is, to my way of thinking, a little awkward when
it comes to screen reader usage. It isn't bad, but there are
some less than intuitive prompts. I would like this petition to
be on the most accessible public petition Website possible.
Would
anyone
on the list perhaps know of a site for a public petition that is
better and/or more accessible than is Change.org?
Thanks to the off-line support and drafting assistance. We've
tried to accommodate the views expressed on this list and
elsewhere
even though, in some instances, the interests were not always
congruent.
In the petition, we have not cited specific issues. I actually
started to do that, but I wanted to get the petition up before
Christmas. <SMILE> Thanks for all your help!

The URL is a bit long. When I started, I didn't know the petition
forum
would grab the whole title and put it in the URL. Sorry about
that. This
site is 100% accessable, and you don't have to load it down with
personal
information.
This was not an easy task to draft this document. Many, many
thanks to the
editorial panel that helped me. I don't have their permission to
release
their names -- yet.
What a fantastic group. In the end, there were just 3 of us. I'm
sure we
will continue to see them on the list.
In the end, I realize this won't meet everyone's expectations. We
ended up
focusing on JAWS only, though a compelling case could be made to
chastise
Freedom Scientific for other sins. It just didn't fit.
Also, we have not called out specific problems. I think we would
still be
collecting input if we had.
Lots of people contacted me off-line, and there were some pretty
divergent
viewpoints. We have tried to accommodate those to the best of our
ability.
Finally, this is worded so that no one has to give up an SMA,
switch to
another product, or anything else specific. Some of us will. I
believe
many who sign will take one of the indicated actions, but no one
who signs
is required to do anything. This is a forum to register publicly
some of
the frustration that has been vented here -- among us members of
the choir.
I need to go back to work!

Re: THE PETITION IS LIVE

Dave...

I think the distinction is not important. One can be the other. Managing
software is keeping control of it, so a form of maintenance.

Hi,
You may want to change "software management" to "software maintenance "
agreement.

Done! And I thank you for offering the forum. Note that I was not ranting,
and I impress on others to please refrain from doing so. I won't tell you
what to say, but remember that "sugar will catch more flies than vinegar".
No, I'm not talking about fishing again. That's another adage.

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

John:
I just fixed the petition. I thought it was frozen once uploaded, but there is a back-door.
So, it now says software maintenance agreement ("SMA").
It happens I was work on a management agreement for a software company. Sorry for the slip.

good catch John. I missed that. Yes, SMA stands for software
maintenance agreement, not software management agreement! let's be
accurate.

Oh, they won't let you tweak it, probably because people signed a certain
version; but the point will be made.
I've taught a lot of students with various complaints over the years, here's
hoping people get aboard.

Don't know how that got past us. You are clearly right, but alas! Too late
to change. I think everyone knows we're talking about an SMA.
