Re: Web Search "Breakthrough" In JAWS 14?

Guido Corona <aloysiusq@...>

Well Gerald, I did listen to the FSCast for September 2012, and indeed find
it very exciting. Like with "research it", which I use at least a dozen times
a day, I suspect that I will become an avid user of "flexible web"PDQ.

Would I also use a hypothetical CAPTIA solver? Oh, most definitely I would,
but....

1. I do try to ferret out cluttered/nasty pages several times a day, while
CAPTIA drive me mad only a couple of times per month.

2. CAPTIA solvers would require some AI work for images/sounds that go way
beyond the kind of syntactic parsing of DOM notes that screen reader
developers do best. Hence, I do not expect solvers any time soon.

Do I represent a typical JAWS user? .... Or do you represent a typical user?
... No idea!

Yet, I do so love the old adage... "Do not offer me solutions.... I am
fixating on problems!"

Saluti, Guido

Here we go again. I just listened to FSCast 70 in which Eric Damery and
Jonathan Mosen hype up the latest JAWS "breakthrough": a new feature in JAWS
14 called flexible web that allows you to skip over "visual clutter" on web
pages by creating rules. After the demo by Jonathan Mosen, I was left
wondering whether this new feature is more hype tnan help, much like Research
It. I'm sure many JAWS users will find flexible web to be a useful feature,
but to call it a "breakthrough" is a stretch. A real breakthrough would have
been a captcha solving feature, so for me, flexible web is a disappointment.
I'm sure you guys just can't wait for the release of public beta 2 of JAWS 14
to test this latest "breakthrough" from the fine folks at FS. I can only
imagine how big and bloated the final release version of JAWS 14 will be.

Gerald

You will have to use a Parallel cable to get the Power Braille to work with Windows vista/7 and JAWS 11 or later. The only place I could find the parallel cable that will work was from Freedom Scientific. Not sure what they are charging for the cable, if they still are selling them or where else you could get them.

On another note, I did have the Power Braille and baught the parallel cable but I couldn't get it to work so I wheeled and dealed with Freedom Scientific to trade my Power Braille for the Focus 40 Blu about 2 years ago.

Original message:
Hi Everyone,
I have a question about connecting the PowerBraille 40 and using JAWS. Here is the scenario.
Today a friend of mine went out and purchased a USB to parallel converter to connect to her computer and the PowerBraille 40 braille display. Upon connecting, JAWS announces that braille drivers could not be loaded. My question is does any of you use the PowerBraille and how did you get it to work with JAWS?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello there;
Here's some steps for you,
Note, they may be a little long, but as you get use to the process, most
likely you will find you can eliminate a couple of steps.

the easiest way to do this is;

1, place a blank CD into the drive.
If a wizard comes up, just press alt+f4.

2, navigate to your music folder,
Now select the music you want to burn to disk/DVD, Press the applications
key, up arrow and enter on, Send-to sub-menu, Up or down arrow and enter on
the CD/DVD drive.

Note most likely a wizard will come up.
The screen will be something like this;

Burn a Disc
How do you want to use this disc?
Disc title: July 11 2012
Like a USB flash drive
Save, edit, and delete files on the disc anytime. The disc will work on
computers running Windows XP or later. (Live File System) With a CD/DVD
player Burn files in groups and individual files can't be
edited or removed after burning. The disc will also work on most
computers. (Mastered) Which one should I choose?
Next Cancel

So, you would tab and enter on,
Next button,

give a little time you should hear; Files Ready to Be Written to disk,
Press applications key, Up or down arrow and enter on burn.
Note, your still in your CDDrive with the files showing.

now you will see this screen;
Burn to Disc
Burn to Disc
Prepare this disc
Disc title:
July 11 2012
Recording speed:

New files being burned to the disc will replace any files already on
the disc if they have the same name.
Close the wizard after the files have been burned Next Cancel Here
you would press spacebar or the enter key on next.

now will see the following screen;
Burn to Disc
Burn to Disc
Burn an audio CD
Music files can be burned to disc as data for playback on the
computer, or in a format that will play on a home or car stereo.
Which format do you want to use?
Make an audio CD (for standard audio CD players) Make a data CD (for
computers and some CD players) Next Cancel

The make a audio cd is checked, so go to next, and press enter.

you will now hear;

Windows media player, jaws will repeat this, media player, media player.

go to desktop,
Tab twice,

One time is the start button,
The next press of the tab, you will probably hear, Computer, or,
something just right arrow until you hear, Windows media player,
press enter.

This is now the last step,

With windows media player opened,

Use the tab key, until you hear;
Start burn button,
Alt+s,

So press the spacebar,

And, you can also try;
Once you enter on windows media player, You could just press
alt+s=burn,

hope this helps a little.

One time is the start button,
The next press of the tab, you will probably hear, Computer, or,
something just right arrow until you hear, Windows media player,
press enter.

This is now the last step,

With windows media player opened,

Use the tab key, until you hear;
Start burn button,
Alt+s,

So press the spacebar,

And, you can also try;
Once you enter on windows media player, You could just press
alt+s=burn,

hope this helps a little.

Web Search "Breakthrough" In JAWS 14?

Gerald Levy

Here we go again. I just listened to FSCast 70 in which Eric Damery and Jonathan Mosen hype up the latest JAWS "breakthrough": a new feature in JAWS 14 called flexible web that allows you to skip over "visual clutter" on web pages by creating rules. After the demo by Jonathan Mosen, I was left wondering whether this new feature is more hype tnan help, much like Research It. I'm sure many JAWS users will find flexible web to be a useful feature, but to call it a "breakthrough" is a stretch. A real breakthrough would have been a captcha solving feature, so for me, flexible web is a disappointment. I'm sure you guys just can't wait for the release of public beta 2 of JAWS 14 to test this latest "breakthrough" from the fine folks at FS. I can only imagine how big and bloated the final release version of JAWS 14 will be.

Gerald

Re: JAWS and PowerBraille 40 Connection

Milton Ota <mota1252@...>

Brian and Denise Albriton <autoharp@...>

Well a pox on them not helping!
In any case, I can only relate my own experience. We had to have a real parallel cable and parallel port, I shoud add the tech who set it up, someone in the access technology business, had to spend a lot of time on the phone with Freedom. It is a real bear to get done.

Re: JAWS and PowerBraille 40 Connection

Pat Byrne

Robbie,
I had some trouble connecting a Braille embosser using an USB to parallel converter. I was told at the time, probably three or four years ago that not all converters are created equal. I returned at least one unit, perhaps two and then got one that did the trip. That was with XP and of course an earlier verion of JAWS. When the serial and parallell ports went away it got a lot harder to manage a lot of the legacy hardware.
Hope this helps at least some.
