Start settings center (the sequence I'm aware of is with the program
you want to change behavior for focused is type jaws+f2 then go down
to settings center and hit enter, but there may be a direct
keystroke).

Then go down and open the "Graphics and Symbols" group and change the
value for "Graphic verbosity"

You can also do this for all programs by hitting ctrl+shift+d before
changing the graphic verbosity setting.

I have resolved the issue. It was not a Jaws setting after all. I have

plugged the keyboard into the PS2 port of the computer & everything is

Re: problems with comboboxes on this site

Bob,

Two things occur to me. One is that if you're already in forms mode, you
don't necessarily need to press alt-down arrow to open the combo box. I know
this is sometimes true, if not always.

Second, after arrowing up or down to your selection inside the combo box,
press alt-up arrow to keep it in place.

This site has several combo boxes to narrow search results. The only one
I've successfully changed with Jaws is the number of bedrooms.
Alt+down arrow doesn't' appear to open the control although I am in
forms mode. Also keep moving to the address bar when I tab from the price
combo box.

Anyone want to try this out for me?

As I've stated here before, we're using both 7 and a newer version of

1. Yes, but there is a way to make Windows Mail (not WLM) work on
Windows
7,
and it's just like good old Outlook Express.

2. Yes, it does cost, but it's very good for calendar, contacts, and

3. Yes, I think one is Thunderbird. However I've never used it, just
heard
it on this list. I'm sure you'll hear more.

grumbling and some gnashing of teeth by users.
2. Outlook 2010 is much better with jaws 13 but one has to fork over
the
big
bucks to get the full blown Microsoft Office.

3. There are some other email programs that some of you think are
quite
good
with jaws and windows 7, but I don't remember what they are.

Are my impressions reasonably accurate?

Hi, Tom.

my
black hole of an Inbox. Just wanted you to know you're still coming

Out of curiosity, how long are your documents? My Word docs are fairly
short, but I could put one together to get the same page length to see if
I
can replicate your problem here. Also, might it be a question of low RAM
i.e., too many open applications using up your RAM?

Hello.

Recently, I have been encountering a frustrating problem at work when
reading through documents in Microsoft Word 2010 with Windows 7 and
Jaws 13.

Specifically, I can navigate through the first page or so of the
document fine. However, after that, Jaws becomes extremely sluggish,
and fails to speak consistently. Often, the computer actually seems
to freeze up for a few seconds, until Jaws recovers, only to have the
problem happen again after another brief period of reading.

I have tried to read the documents using the draft option under the
view tab, but to no avail.

Do you have any solutions to this problem, or suggestions of things
for me to try to remedy the situation?

Thanks!

Tom Behler from Michigan

Hello.

Recently, I have been encountering a frustrating problem at work when
reading through documents in Microsoft Word 2010 with Windows 7 and Jaws 13.

Specifically, I can navigate through the first page or so of the document
fine. However, after that, Jaws becomes extremely sluggish, and fails to
speak consistently. Often, the computer actually seems to freeze up for a
few seconds, until Jaws recovers, only to have the problem happen again
after another brief period of reading.

I have tried to read the documents using the draft option under the view
tab, but to no avail.

Do you have any solutions to this problem, or suggestions of things for me
to try to remedy the situation?

Thanks!

Tom Behler from Michigan

Hello. Does Jaws work well with netbooks? and is there any suggestions about a netbook that works well for blind users?
Thanks

Re: Google Chrome and jaws 14 beta

Hi, Dave.

When I went to Firefox 15.01 yesterday, I was prompted to update an add-on.
That was simple enough, even though I've checked the automatic update
add-ons box. However, I then stumbled on a button to check for all add-on
updates. I determined that although most had already been updated, some must
be updated manually.

Three add-on/applications were not up to date, even though IE8 sees them as
updated. Two were Adobe Flash-related and the other was Java. Firefox gave
me a link to each update page, and I proceeded accordingly. Firefox's
performance improved immediately.

I emphasize how strange was the absence of updates of these three add-ons.
All my other add-ons were up to date, thanks to the automated updating
option. The three applications in question were up to date as far as IE was
concerned and the update programs I use for them. Moreover, Adobe Flash
Player 11 automatically updates itself, unlike previous AFP versions. (I'm
hoping that Firefox had only AFP 10 and that it, too, will accept automatic
updates from Adobe.)

You might want to go to Firefox's add-ons page and press the button to
update add-ons in case you have a similar situation.

James,

I've used both Firefox and IE with the same application during a given day.
Firefox would lock up, or cause JAWS to crash after 20 minutes or so of
interaction. IE would usually run fine for three times as long.

I use Firefox because it does a better job working with all the forms and
elements than does IE. Reliability vs. Functionality.

I think it's JAWS, however that is just not happy with Firefox.

Firefox 15.0.1
IE 8.0.760
JFW 13.0.924

I don't believe Chrome is built on the Mozilla platform, but I also don't
pay much attention to Chrome as the few times I've fought with it, I ended
up just removing it and using something else. I've noticed, though, that
I've been needing to refresh the screen more frequently when pages update
while using either Firefox or IE on a 32-bit XP system running JAWS 13, so
I'm not entirely sure what the issue is.

Has anyone out there tried using Google Chrome with the Jaws 14 beta?
I've noticed that when going from one web page to another, I seem to need to
refresh the Screen to read the current page.
I also believe this might be happening with Firefox since it is my
understanding that both Chrome and Firefox are built on the Mozilla
platform.
I'm using the 64 bit edition of the beta on a vista machine.

I did manage to download the latest FireFox and it seems to work a little bit better than Chrome when using the beta 14 version of Jaws.
I did notice however that sometimes it will loose focus.
Probably the best thing to do is at least put it in a bug report and see what happens from there.

I can say for sure that chroam uses the firefox scripts etc for jaws
(including the jcf), it's in my config-names.ini and I didn't put it
there. This does tend to make me think that Google at least started
by using some version of the mozilla gecko engine rather than starting
from scratch (gecko is the actual layout/rending system that Firefox
is built around).
