Re: Introduction and a question on router accessibility with Jaws

Tom Lange

Hi Scott,

I've accessed my friend's older Linksys router with Jaws, and one of the newer Cisco routers, too until it got flakey on me and ultimately died. Don't know why that happened but it doesn't matter anyway. I replaced it with a Netgear a few months ago and it works fine, too. All of the aforementioned use a web-style interface which you get to by loading Internet Explorer or Firefox and going to the IP address for the router, which usually is http://192.168.1.1. The router manual should tell you what address to use.

Hope this helps.

Tom

Subject: Introduction and a question on router accessibility with Jaws

Good morning List:

My name is Scott Van gorp and I have been a jaws user for several years both
personally and professionally. My first question for this list concerns the
accessibility of routers with the latest build of Jaws 13. I am considering
switching from my current internet provider to Mediacom cable for faster
speeds and a better price. If I go that route, I'm thinking I would rather
go with my own router to plug into the cable modem than pay a higher price
for their wireless access. Are there any recommendations for a good router
that I can control reliably with Jaws? Thanks for any help.

Re: Introduction and a question on router accessibility with Jaws

James Homuth

Yes, Linksys is a definite option. And since Cisco now owns them, I think
they use similar interfaces so even a Cisco router would work for ya. It's
been a while since I've used them, but another option is d-link. Last I saw,
they had one of the more accessible interfaces, but like I said it's kind of
been a while.

If you are trying to use the shortcut key combination, first press Alt plus Enter to enter the shortcut properties, and make sure that the shortcut key combination is still in the shortcut key dialogue.

Many times, after a repair or re install, the icon remains on the desktop, but the shortcut key combination disappears.

Do you refresh the screen?
I found at times I had to do that.

I am using Windows 7 with JFW 11 and have been able to successfully
post comments on Facebook in the past. Recently, however, I can only
get as far as filling in the comment box with what I want to write,
but I can't get it to post. If there's a "submit" or "post" button, my
screen reader's not detecting it, and just hitting enter doesn't seem
to do anything. Any suggestions?

Cordially,
Tina C.

Hi,
To post it, you need to activate virtual cursor (Numpad Plus), then press B
which should land you at comment button.
Cheers,
Joseph

This is a curiosity more than anything. Yesterday, I was scrolling through
the System Tray (after having pressed JAWS key plus F-11) when I noticed two
entirely separate instances of JAWS apparently running in the system tray.
I always have JAWS run in the system tray (I have too many windows to deal
with as it is).
I did not notice any adverse consequences from this, i.e., I wasn't hearing
things spoken twice.
Isn't this impossible? I've had multiple instances of Word active (never
intentionally) and those operate entirely independently, but I can see no
set of circumstances where JAWS should be running twice.
I'm running 32 bit JAWS under Windows 7.
It's probably just the phase of the moon.

Admin: Email issues.

James Homuth

Folks,

We've been having some issues with people on certain providers receiving
email from the server. The issues would have been going on for at least 3
days, so far as I'm aware. At the moment, I've confirmed Eastlink, Cogeco
and AOL are experiencing problems. I'm in conversation with all 3 providers
at this time to try sorting out what they broke. In the meantime, Eastlink
and Cogeco users, I've temporarily routed mail going to you through a
secondary server while we sort it out. AOL users should be fixed within 24
hours. If not, I'll route you through the same server. Thank you for your
attention.

No, the eject option is not the same as the Safely Remove Hardware option.

If you try the eject option, then go to Computer, you will find that the drive in mention is still there. When you select it and click on it, however, you will find that it asks you to insert a drive. This is because the eject option actually refers to disk or CD drives, rather than thumb drives or SD cards.

If you use the eject option for thumb drives or SD cards, the files may still not be written to the drive when it is ejected. Thus, you may still corrupt the files on the drive if you don't also use the Safely Remove Hardware option.

Thank you.

Bill,
Is selecting "ject" from the context menu for the flash disk drive the same
as "safely remove USB"? Because, i tried the "eject" and then went and found
I still had the option of "safely remove hardware" in my JAWS systray list
box.

Well, Samara, if you can't find an eject option, I would suggest the
following:

Create a Shortcut to the Safely Remove Hardware Dialog

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New \ Shortcut:

Then paste the following into the location box:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

This works for both Windows XP and Windows 7.

Since you are bringing up the Safely Remove Hardware dialogue manually,
there will never be a time when it is unavailable to remove a drive.

If you bring up the dialogue, and the drive isn't visible in the list of
removable hardware, now that's a different matter entirely.

Thank you.

Tom,

If you're removing a USB drive, go to my computer and locate the drive
you
want to remove. Then use your applications key if you have one. If not
use
shift f10. You'll find a menu and one of the choices is eject. Press
enter
and you're good to go. You can also press j from within the menu. Exit
my
computer and you can then remove the drive.

HTH.

Dan

Go to my computer, find the disk. Without pressing enter on the disk,
press applications key and find eject. Press that. If nothing pops up
on
your screen, it is safe to remove the disk.

Subject: Safely removing USB Devices

Hi, all.

How do I safely remove USB devices so as to not risk coruption of SD
cards
and thumb drives?

I do an Insert F11, but even when an SD card or thumb drive are present,
they do not show up on the list of system tray icons. therefore, I
don't
know how to safely remove them.

Thanks!

I would have to agree
with you. It just doesn't sound safe to remove a USB device like that.
