Hello all,

i have a 70 cell Alva Satellite Pro braille display, but there are 2 cells near to the left edge, which are broken. I wanted to set Jaws to start displaying text on the 8th cell, which is the first of all the good cells. In JConfig, on the Braille Settings Dialog, within the Advanced Display settings, there are 2 fields for the start and end position. However, according to the help, these settings can be used only for Pac Mate and Focus displays. Can't users modify these values for other devices?

Thanks for your answer

With best regards,

Dávid

Gerald:

After all, it is only right and proper, that Microsoft should make the effort, in producing a good set of house-cleaning tools, to clean up the mess that they create in the first place.

And, as I have said before, it is not a question as to whether Microsoft will eventually screw up with Internet Essentials, but when, they will screw up.

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

What do you mean that MSE is not taken very seriously? It has consistently garnered positive reviews from leading tech experts . It is very much a heavyweight among anti-virus programs, and has outranked AVG and Avast in a number of comparative studies.

I have always found that it slows me down as JAWS reads too much of the garbage on the web page with a web based program. I have been very satisfied first with Outlook Express and now Windowsmail and will most likely use the adaptations when I upgrade to Win7.

You can have Yahoo just send posts to your regular email client, by the way.
I've never liked dealing with email through a Web interface, on Hotmail, or anywhere else really. I guess that makes me old-fashioned.

Re: security

The only way to find out if it's really better is to test it against actual viruses and malicious programmes. Many people use it; it wouldn't hurt you to try out the programme for yourself and see if you like it. Always remember that there are lots of alternatives available, and that's almost always a good thing....

Microsoft Security Escentials. Meets all of your requirements, and well,
doesn't bust your system in several different places. Just a thought.

Hi,
I'm running windows 7 and jaws 12. I'm looking for a free accessible
comprehensive security program that blocks viruses, spyware, etc. Any
suggestions?
Thanks!

Re: Yahoo's New Inbox

Charles Krugman

I have always found that it slows me down as JAWS reads too much of the garbage on the web page with a web based program. I have been very satisfied first with Outlook Express and now Windowsmail and will most likely use the adaptations when I upgrade to Win7.

You can have Yahoo just send posts to your regular email client, by the way.
I've never liked dealing with email through a Web interface, on Hotmail, or anywhere else really. I guess that makes me old-fashioned.

Re: security

JM Casey <crystallogic@...>

My two cents: I wouldn't use Mcafee, though it is certainly jaws-friendly enough it's expensive and doesn't really do what a lot of the cheaper alternatives do. It also failed spectacularly to clean a piece of malware off my work computer, though it detected it upon every bootup..malwarebytes solved the problem and has generally been invaluable to me, so I would use that in combination with avast, or maybe AVG, though the latter seems to be getting weird lately. Eset and mod32 are also highly rated, though I have yet to try those out. One antivirus, and one antimalware/spyware is all you need...never run more than one of each if they're going to be operating in memory.

I would use Malwarebytes in combination with something like Avast, or maybe AVG

I use Mcafee and if you put it in the task tray it is very accessible and
works great, trend micro was a nightmare, so don't go there , but windows
defender worked well and didn't cost anything like mcafee

Hi,htmare so don't go there and I don't know if it is in Microsoft security
essentials , but windows defender worked really well too
I recommend Microsoft Security esencials - just google it.

With best regards,

I have to agree with putting the response first, I usually skip any message
that reads me stuff I have read before, unless I was the one asking the
question or if the answer is so important that I have to see it.

Ok. I'll try to do so. Most sighted people like it the other way, so I'll
adapt depending to which list I am posting.

Re: Web browsers

JM Casey <crystallogic@...>

The latest version? I thought that didn't work too well? They're at version 5 now, with 6 on the way; considering that even 4 is fairly new I think they're throwing them at users far too quickly, and all of a sudden...better to stick with the version that you know works, in this case, probably version 4.

Get the latest Firefox. I don't think the other 2 are accessible, but haven't personally tried.

Re: Putting your response first, was: security

JM Casey <crystallogic@...>

A bit off topic (though not completely), but the old (read, pre-mass-market-internet) accepted standard seemed to be to put your response after the message to which you were replying, but the current majority preference seems to be the reverse. That said, quoting specific parts of a message to which you intend to respond is a nice habit to get into, though it's hardly necessary for non-technical lists where there's really neither much debate or jargon, like this one.

Re: security

JM Casey <crystallogic@...>

That's good to know Dave. I've heard plenty of conflicting things about Avast myself but not given it a try yet. Currently trying out Avira. It seems ok but the notifications that pop up every now and then are completely unreadable, which is an irritant to be sure...so I may switch yet.

It is really funny you should have heard that about Avast because, I have it on my system and I had no problems navigating any of the tab pages nor choosing how to set the choices under any of the Settings options.

At first, I did have a problem in turning off the Sand Box feature but, with a little perseverance, I did manage to turn it off.

Well, I suppose some of us do not give up at the first hurdle

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

It's my understanding that the latest version of avast isn't screen reader
friendly.

Avast is highly inaccessible, I've found. That, and it's a little bit too
jumpy for my tastes. Often recognizes things as infections that, well,
aren't. Including components of a competing screenreader that was removed
for another reason.
