Try using the caps lokc key and the numpad key 3. The caps lock key replaces the jaws key.

In Microsoft Word, JAWS key plus NumPad 3 reads the Status Line. Is there a laptop keyboard layout keystroke for this, or is there a way to assign another key for this in Keyboard Manager for those without a NumPad?
