moderated Re: reading footnotes in a word document
Ok, I shall wait until next week when I plan to upgrade. Also Richard, for me there is no concern whether footnotes appear at bottom of page, I usually switch to draft view when reading long documents in braille. Usually when I pick a footnote number, I press the relevant cursor routing button and usually go to them with cntrl-shift-e which pays most of the time. However, since this is really a preview screen and I particularly want to read a very long note, I use the customary method of windows key-colon, arrow down to footnotes and then have to find the one I want, a bit more tedious when you get to say, note 289 or so. Take care, Takis

I’m using Jaws 2021. That might be the difference.

Richard, I will try it again, perhaps this may have changed with latest jaws2020 version. I shall let you all know. Takis

With my Orbit Reader 20 plus, in Word 2016 from Microsoft Office 365, leaving the UI option checked and having Comments, Footnotes, and Endnotes Detection On in Reading OptionsWord Settings, when I come to a footnote with the braille display it shows the number sign, dot 1 for number 1, with dots 7,8 under both cells, and so on. Then, at the bottom of the page, it shows the number and the text of the footnote. I am using UEB Contracted.

Hi Richard/all, Will give it a try, but at least for me, using braille, I lost the ability to find footnote numbers in documents and thus proceed with reading them. Cheers, Takis

I find that leaving UI checked works fine. If you look instead for the footnote setting, and make sure it is checked for On, for me, Jaws reads the foottnote as I read the document. Here is what Jaws says about the UI setting: Use UIA for Word 365 Documents checked‑

Hi Justin, I am outside word now, but while in word after hitting insert-v I simply type ui on the search box and I get it. Have not explored the actual category, but let me know if you are having difficulty, and will have a look. Take care, Takis

Hi Richard/all, Kevin may have had an option called “ui” something checked, which is located in the word options of jaws. I think it’s related to office use only, but I am not sure. I found that, while that was checked, footnote numbers did not show up in text, though speech might well have read them, I usually work with a braille display, so it was absolutely essential for me to have the footnote numbers showing. Once I unchecked that box, note numbers came back as usual. Hope this helps, Takis

He meant just jawsKey plus v. The main thing is looking at the footnote options to have it read. I'm not at my computer right now to check the exact wording.
