With the quality of the free NVDA screen reader being so good I can'timagine anyone paying $1000 for Jaws. I don't disagree that NVDA has now become a very high quality and capable screen reader. However, consumers in the U.S. who need a home license can purchase the home annual license for $90 a year. Also, JAWS possesses many features and capabilities which are not currently offered by NVDA, not to mention many different ways of configuring the screen reader not found in NVDA.
