Hi, I can confirm that the Dell uses Fn+esc to toggle back to function key mode.

I occasionally get JAWS only saying read or unread in the message list. I just alt tab away and back again to fix it.
The quick settings will change if the application that is open is different each time, unless you select default from the combo box, which is a shift tab away from the search box.

We have Outlook, and the laptop is new from the university where I am a faculty member. So, I think it is all Office 365 based, they just aren’t making us work all on line in office yet.

Sometimes the age-old classic advice of turning the thing off and then back on again often fixes problems. What email program do you use?

And, after another reboot, it seems to be reading my emails again.

The issue you're having where pressing f2 and f3 changes the volume may be the way the computer has been configured. Temporarily, if you press the FN key along with the function key you may get the expected results you're looking for, such as pressing alt-fn-f4 to close a program. Does pressing the FN key along with escape return the function keys to their normal state?

Actually, it is a laptop, and JAWS is set to laptop layout.

What is your old computer a desktop?

Reason I ask because it sounds like you’re using the key combinations for a desktop not a laptop.

Hi All,

I will start by begging your patience as I try to sort out a new Dell laptop and an upgrade from JAWS 17 to JAWS 2020. I will start with a couple of things so far, and I am sure there will be more.

  1. JAWS isn’t reading the emails in my inbox – Outlook. It only tells me if and when I have replied, and it tells me if it was sent with high importance.
  2. The function keys don’t seem to be doing anything, although F2 and F3 seem to be controlling the volume. Similarly, insert + the function keys don’t seem to do anything like bring up a list of running windows etc.
  3. I keep going into JAWS quick settings and making changes that it doesn’t seem to be saving.

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

Cynthia
