I changed a battery in a Dell about 8 years ago. I did it with the power cord unplugged, because I am not messing around inside a piece of gear with power connected and never lost anything as far as settings goes. It worked fine when plugged in and I was able to set the clock.

If you or, someone else decide to change the lythium backup battery, do not remove the power cable, when the old lythium battery is removed, because, if you do remove the power cable with no backup battery inserted, all the bios settings will be lost. If you have automatically adjust the time then as someone said, your battery may be going out because it shouldn't slow down. You can get into those settings and adjust it manually, but I just leave mine so it syncs with the internet. I also find it is easier to cope with settings if I put Jaws in Speech on Demand and launch Narrator. It's off by at least 15 minutes which is rather annoying. I'm running Jaws 2018 and Windows 10. Thanks Madison
