Moderated Re: Best Jaws version with Win 8.1

Hi Milton,
The PC I’m speaking of is an refurbished HP business PC I bought from New Egg for cheap. I use it as a media center, of sorts, as it is attached to my home stereo receiver to stream music, etc. So I’m just trying to squeeze some more life out of it.
My main PC is faithfully updated and protected as it is used for work and personal data.
But it never hurts to mention what you did as it is excellent advice for someone who may have their one and only PC running 8.1.
Thanks, as always, Norma

Hello Norma,
I’m not sure if you are aware but, these days if you are doing Zoom conferencing or any other form of online conferencing, you should make sure that Windows is up-to-date and the conferencing app/program you are using is up-to-date as well for security purposes.
I would highly recommend that you look into a new computer system if your Windows 8.1 cannot be updated.

Hi Milton,
I’m running Win 8.1 from a fresh install to an HP desktop which had Win 7 and was not eligible for an update to Win 10.I didn’t think about updating the Win 8.1. to 10, I will look into that possibility.
I will double check to see if Office 365 is up to date. I’m pretty sure it is, but thanks for the reminder, I will double check it.
Thanks for your note, Norma

Hello,
I am not sure if this has been addressed but from seeing your response, Norma, Have you check to see if you are eligible for upgrading your Win 8.1 to Windows 10?
Have you check to see if you have installed the updates for Office 365?
I would try these steps and get updated to properly see that JAWS 2020 is then still giving you the problems you are describing.

Hi,
All I have to go on is problems that occur when using J2020 do not occur when using 2019. They include:
Even more sluggishness in outlook 365, esp. when replying to a message
In Word 365, Jaws says “normal” when I arrow up and down through lines whether they have text or not. I spent an hour with a FS tech trying to resolve this issue and we finally ended up restoring J2020 factory settings. Major PITA. J2020 was OK for a few months, and now it’s happening again. So I need to use J2019 when working in Word.
There are other issues which I can’t recall now. And I know I’m not the only one who’s expressing frustration with J2020 problems.
Regards, Norma

Well…what problems are you having? Is there any particular reason you feel your performance issues are related to jaws?

Hi and thanks. I’ll give 2020 a try with my Win 8.1 PC, but I’m not too optimistic. I can’t even get optimal performance using J2020 with Windows 10. But, maybe I’ll get lucky…

Get the latest version, if you can. You can always still keep older versions on the computer in case you need them at a later time.

Hi group,
I’d like a recommendation as to the version of Jaws which will give me optimal performance with Windows 8.1 pro.
Thanks, Norma
