If you hit down arrow on the Save split button, you will get three options. Save, save as, and save and open. If you hit enter on save as, you will get your generic save as dialog box.

I follow wwhat you said and it works. I like to file my books in subfolders
at the time of download so when I want them I go through those subfolders
rather than the extensive list of downloads I have. How can I do this when
downloading this way?
When I hit alt-n the only choices I have are open, save, cancel, and close.

It sounds to me like Internet Explorer 9 is behaving normally. When You
get that prompt just press alt+N and tab to the save split button. Click
that and wait for the download to complete. You might want to do another
alt+N again and tab to the close button to close the notification bar.
Your zipped download will be found in the download folder under owner.
From there you can unzip it or move it to what ever folder you want to
move it to.
