The American English synthesizer is installed by default. JAWS will not allow you to delete it without causing some type of error, including the type of error you mentioned. The reason for this, is that the vast majority of JAWS users are English speaking. It is obvious therefore, Freedom Scientific presumes, quite rightly, English speaking people will want a voice synthesizer that speaks English, to be installed by default, so they can use JAWS immediately. The same would apply if the vast majority of JAWS users were Egyptian. If you wish to exclude any of the voice synthesizers that come with JAWS, apart from the American English synthesizer, you should choose the custom install during the installation process and uncheck any voice synthesizer you do not want installed, apart from the American English Voice Synthesizer, which you cannot exclude. In addition, it appears that you cannot use the JAWS Synthesizer and Braille Manager to do what you want. Regardless of the type of synthesizer you Choose in that utility, you land in a list dialog box with ten synthesizers listed in it. Please Note: I did not see any of the voices for the different languages, supported by Eloquence listed at all. Unless you have a very small hard drive, where space is valuable, with all due respect, I think you are creating and worrying about a problem, in the same way as an itch on your back that you cannot reach to scratch to get rid of it. For example, the system drive in my PC, is 60 GB. With all the programs I have installed on it, at the time of writing, including JAWS and Windows XP professional, the total disk space used by all the programs and operating system, is about 14.5 GB. That means, I have about 45.5 GB of disk space left. Am I worried about having the additional Eloquence languages installed? Of course not! I have more important things to concern me and worry about, such as making a living, dealing with the problems which a Microsoft operating system throws up on a regular basis, wondering what web sites are accessible to us using access technology, dealing with the ever changing software upgrades an new software, as to whether it is or will be accessible to people such as those of us on lists like this one, plus, dealing with the rest of every day life.
