So you are saying when you tried the old keyboard the letter L was sticking, but Alt + F4 and other keyboard shortcuts with function keys like Jaws Key + F12 for the time and so on worked?
If that is the case then you may simply need a new keyboard. How old is the keyboard you are using and was it just what I call a "cheap" mainstream wired keyboard like the ones you can buy for $20 or was it a more expensive mechanical keyboard?
In my experience the cheap keyboards which often come with a computer will only last a couple of years before they start to do weird things and even the better Logitech wireless keyboards like the MK510/540 or even more expensive MK710 (those "MK" models are mouse/keyboard combos) have a limited life span.
At home I use a Logitech K780 which is quite nice, but at work I have actually gone back to mostly high-end wired mechanical keyboards, in this case I decided on the keyboards from the company "Das Keyboard" and the model I have is the "Professional 4". They are made from aluminum with Cherry MX Blue switches and a fantastic built quality, each keyboard also has 2 USB 3.0 ports on the back, but they also are $220 Canadian, I think in the US they go for around $150 or $160 and at least last Black Friday I didn't even see them on sale. I only bought them less than a year ago and I guess I'll see if they indeed will pay for themselves by lasting 6 or more years because typically before I bought Logitech wireless keyboards where I could probably buy 3 for the price of one of these Das Keyboard models, but I would have to replace them every 2 years or so.

Sieghard, I appreciate all of the responses I've had. I don't know the model of my keyboard and, when I tried to check the original emails around its purchase, I couldn't find the information. I'm using Windows 10 and JAWS 17 (soon to be updated to JAWS 2020). I don't have a sighted person handy just now but oculd try an old keyboard which was okay except for the letter l sticking.

Hi Don,

If none of the function keys work I think it's time to look more closely at your keyboard.
Do you know the make and model?
Would you have another keyboard around you could plug in and try? I suspect that your keyboard either has a button or switch to disable the function keys and you accidently pushed it or it is defective in some other way.

I'm using a desktop computer. Last night I could use JAWS key plus F12 to get time as usual. Now I've tried that plus other key combinations with the JAWS key and none of them works.

I was asking because some keyboards have a switch or button which locks the function keys and yet others like the Logitech K780 require you to press also the FN key along with any other key combination, e.g. without Logitech Options software installed where you can tell the function keys to behave normally, you would have to press FN + Alt + F4.
Another question I would have is whether this is on a laptop or a desktop?
If it's on a laptop, does Alt + F4 work if you use the laptop's keyboard?
Lastly, are other function key shortcuts working, e.g. Jaws Key + F7 to pull up a list of links on a website or even just Jaws Key + F10 for a list of open applications or Jaws Key + F11 to speak the time?

Yesterday a friend helped me fill in the province of British Columbia's speculation tax form online. He ran into a snag, so started again with a fresh format and we sent the completed form off. I could not close the first form but shut down the computer. I don't know if it's related, but since then I cannot close Word files or emails. I can open and read them and move them, but I can't close them. If I'm in my email list, I can use Alt tab to get out of an open email, then delete or move it, but the open email is still there. I assume that somehow I've frozen the Alt F4 function. My only resort is to shut down the computer. When I start it up again, emails I've deleted both from In and Deleted folders reappear. Any thoughts?

I'm using Windows 10 and JAWS 17, though I plan to purchase JAWS 2020 in a few weeks.

I'd appreciate any help.
