Registry hack that makes XP think it's a point of sale machine? I've never heard of that one before. No, I don't think I installed that one. The most recent thing I did with Windows is a SFC Scan, which shouldn't have affected Outlook or any non Windows components. The SFC Scan should make the machine run faster, right?

Anti-virus is all you need at startup.
Did you ever install the registry hack that makes XP think it's a point of sale (POS) machine?
Microsoft continued with those updates to XP until at least last April.
Also, you may want to consider booting to WinPE just to scan your entire partition, sometimes viruses hide in the boot sector and can't be detected while the computer is running.
