Well, have you ever been able to edit a spreadsheet? Try opening
a new blank workbook in excel and see if that works. If it does,
then something is either wrong with the spreadsheet you are trying
to edit, or there is some setting or other that needs changed.

For me, f6 by itself its mute.
It all depends on why you can't edit it. If it is protected,
you have to turn that off. Another thing I've found that made
things get really weird is if you accidentally have scroll
lock turned on, in which case it might seem like you can't
edit because moving the cursor around doesn't seem to do
Do you get any messages about protection when you open the
spreadsheet, have you pressed f6 to see what might be going on
in the other areas? Btw, what version of office are we
talking about here?
