It all depends on why you can't edit it. If it is protected, you have to turn that off. Another thing I've found that made things get really weird is if you accidentally have scroll lock turned on, in which case it might seem like you can't edit because moving the cursor around doesn't seem to do anything.
Do you get any messages about protection when you open the spreadsheet, have you pressed f6 to see what might be going on in the other areas? Btw, what version of office are we talking about here?
