As a rule of thumb, with the speed of computers now, if you write to the card, give it 10 or 15 seconds, then you can pull it out safely without ejecting.

They're not write-cached, either, as they're considered USB devices. And I just checked that on my own machine, where I have an SD card that I routinely pull without ejecting without any ill effects.
