Hi Anne.

It might have something to do with your encoding; I do not see these
characters normally in Brian's messages, but in the one you quoted below
yours, as in, in your response where you have quoted his message, they do
appear.

Is there a way to avoid the  characters
liberally sprinkled through your messages? the messages would be sooo much
easier to read without them.
