Re: Which twain compatible scanner for use with Jaws 2018/2019 OCR feature

And if you use Jaws OCR you can really use any scanner TWAIN compatible or not. We use a Fujitsu Scansnap IX500 document scanner which is a scanner which pulls the pages through instead of having to put them on a flatbed and it lets you very easily save the image file as a PDF, then you could just do the OCR on the PDF file.
The Scansnap is amazing, I had a $1,200 HP Scanjet 8500 before which had a 14 inch flatbed and I bought the $300 document feeder attachment and besides being positively huge compared to the little Scansnap the document feeder had lots of issues and after 4 or 5 years quit working. I had the Scansnap now for probably 6 or 7 years and paid $500 for it and it just scans and scans and it's so incredibly fast. I can put in a stack of 10 double sided pages and it pulls them through in about 30 seconds scanning both sides at the same time. I have a retail store and we scan all our invoices and other paperwork and virtually keep no more paper files and if the Fujitsu ever quits I would never buy anything but the same scanner or whatever the follow-up model is.

Hi, I use an Epson Perfection 550 and on occasion I hve scanned using my Brother 4 in 1 printer /scanner. Both work fine but Epson a bit faster. Canon also makes some good units although , my experience, not as reliable or clear which then affects accuracy.
Open Book is good however there are now competing products which are as competitive in price and quality. Open Book has not been updated in years.
Whatever you choose just don't go for price alone.

Hello All,

I just learned today that, starting with version 2018, Jaws supports some limited OCR scanning. The Jaws tech support would not recommend a scanner. The only thing they said is that it had to be TWAIN compatible.

I have started researching scanners and would like the list's opinions. Especially from those using the Jaws OCR feature. Right now I just want to OCR my mail. Eventually, I plan to purchase OpenBook. In the mean time, I can't decide if I should go with one of the lower end Brother's mobile scanners or if I should purchase a multi function printer/scanner/fax models.

Looking on Amazon, there a a lot of scanners to choose from. I'd like to keep the cost under $250 unless this isn't reasonable.

All opinions are welcome.

Thanks Mike
