You can also do a insert v go in to general options and check whether or not
you want jaws to start reading a web page right away was soon as it loads or
not

i tend to use keyboard echo settings and just hit the control key
when I want it to stop reading. pretty simple.

At 02:11 PM 1/9/2012, you wrote:
I wonder this.
I have been just using that command where you type INSERT and

I have been stopping my typing echo this way, and sometimes just
doing that when JAWS is reading a lot of junk on a web page that I
may not want to hear at a particular moment.

I wonder if this is not a good practice for any other reason.
I used to configure my Typing Echo settings for different
programs. But lately I have just been doing this, turning speech
off and back on.

Thanks.

O dot Addison,

Strange. Still thinking on it.

My mobile facebook has always pronounced the dot on my computer and I just
don't bother trying to resolve it.

Maybe that's your best plan.

Or call FS and have them help you, since they "broke it" in the first place.

Sorry if I was not clear.
I use the key sequence to temporarily turn off the Typing Echo.
And sometimes I will do it when I am walking off while a process is on and I

know JAWS will be talking stuff I do not need to hear.
such as like a ripping or something.

Sure. Quick CTRL key is the good and quick Shut Up key.
Probably the first JAWS command I ever learned! And a good one, still.
Thanks.

Oh, for that I use Insert+S to set to none.

Again I'm reluctant to ever leave my computer in a state where no keypresses

Oh.
Hey.
How about that.
Then I guess I do not understand.

And what is INSERT + S supposed to do exactly?

Do you mean it supposed to turn the Typing Echo to no characters to talk?
I tried it. It did not do anything.
My speech did rotate each time I pressed, it said All, Highlighted, and
None.
But I noticed no difference in that each character was talking.
Does that mean I have a problem?

Windows 7 Home Premium.
Jaws 13.0.0638.

Please elaborate, okay?

Thanks.
Rik

Rik,

Oh, for that I use Insert+S to set to none.

Again I'm reluctant to ever leave my computer in a state where no keypresses
make JAWS speak (except the antidote Insert+Space, then S).

Thanks.

Not a good idea, and why use three keys when just tapping one of the Control

I wonder this.
I have been just using that command where you type INSERT and SPACEBAR, and
then press S and JAWS says SPEECH OFF, or SPEECH ON when I repeat the
keystrokes.

I have been stopping my typing echo this way, and sometimes just doing that
when JAWS is reading a lot of junk on a web page that I may not want to hear
at a particular moment.

I wonder if this is not a good practice for any other reason.
I used to configure my Typing Echo settings for different programs. But
lately I have just been doing this, turning speech off and back on.

Thanks.
Rik

Oh, my apologies, Dave, and list.
I was being lazy.
I write that email, then I go and look up the keystroke in Jaws help.
I see. INSERT + S is for Screen Echo. INSERT + the number 2 is for Typing
echo.
Got it.

I can reach up for the number 2 and hit it until it says "None." Or I can
hit INSERT + SPACEBAR and press S to turn ON and OFF the speech in general.

I need to review all I do not know. I need to learn more and stop being so
lazy.
Or just get my pea brain on board more of the time.

I really do not quite understand what Screen Echo is, exactly.
So I need to just find a bit of time to do nothing else but review all of
the stuff in that there JAWS Help program.
Maybe some of it will sink in and I will be a smarter user of the program.

Thanks.

no no, insert+S changes screen echo between all, highlight, and none.

Rik, I feel your pain. I only know what I know with JAWS, and that's
probably very little compared to most of the people on here. Still not
exactly sure what you were trying to do, but I keep my typing echo set to
none and my screen echo to highlighted. Not sure why for the latter,
though. I've never experimented with the other settings...

Subject: [Cavi-announce] This years enrollments press release

Hi everyone,
Here is this years CAVI press release. Please feel free to distribute it far
and wide. I got this shiny new job and don't have as much time to advertise
so I am leaving this in your most capable hands!
Thanks so much,
Grace

Greetings,

Are you curious about the hardware inside of your computer? Do you want to
sharpen your troubleshooting and computer maintenance skills? Perhaps you
would like to build a computer or home network of your own.

The Cisco Academy for the Vision Impaired enables blind students to enter
the world of Information technology. We provide Diagram descriptions, audio
lab recordings, live online lectures by blind and vision impaired
instructors, and a community of students and instructors to network with
even after you have graduated our courses.

The academy is currently taking applications for the first semester of 2012.
We will be offering IT Essentials, Discovery 1, Exploration 1, and our brand
new Linux administration course starting the first week of February.

IT Essentials is an introduction to PC repair including: Hardware,
installing and maintaining an operating system, Troubleshooting, portable
devices, and customer service.

Discovery 1 is focused on home and small business networking. It is the
first of four courses that prepare students to take the CCNA certification.

Exploration is a more in depth look at networking, both theoretical and
practical for those students who wish to really get their hands into
building and designing networks. After completing Exploration 1, students
may sit the CCENT exam.

The Linux Administration course introduces server-based Linux systems
administration for vision impaired users.

? Students will learn how to install and configure a Ubuntu server system
and install and configure a number of server based programs such as
webserver,

? Email and a wiki. The course aims to take a student from what is Linux
to installing and using a Linux-based server system via SSH.

Each class runs for a total of six months, with online lectures. The classes
are self-paced so you can finish them in a month, or take the entire
semester if desired. The cost for each course is 500 US dollars however;
scholarships are available to students who are paying out of pocket that
lower the price to $150. Your eligibility for a scholarship will be assessed
as part of the application process and payment plans are available. Students
are required to have good internet access skills and be familiar with their
screen reader of choice, or be willing to teach themselves the necessary
skills as we go along. Students should be familiar with reading Adobe PDF
documents, as they may be encountered while doing research projects. We do
not teach basic computer skills. Course content is online, so a broadband
internet connection is highly recommended. Students should also have a
working headset/microphone and be willing to install Skype and Ventrilo, in
order to attend lectures and communicate with instructors. Applications will
be accepted until February 3, 2012.

For more information on any of our courses or to request an application,
please email

caviinfo@...

You can also visit our website at:

www.ciscovision.org finally, we have a podcast about the CAVI program from
our student?s point of view at:

Regards,

The CAVI Team

Yes, that is good to know.
I tried that.
It did work.
Nice and quiet with the None setting on Screen Echo while the process did
its thing.

One thing I noticed about the Typing Echo toggle using INSERT + number 2.
If I used that method, and happened to ALT + TAB to go and check something,
then I come back and Typing Echo would be back to ON again.
Whereas the INSERT + SPACEBAR, letter F did not do this.

Thanks.

Rik,

No problem. In general, if you do have text that is appearing on your screen
during some sort of processing (which is what I think you were describing)
then you can silence it temporarily by setting screen echo to None.

You can drive yourself crazy by setting it to All.

Thanks.

Rik,

Oh, for that I use Insert+S to set to none.

Again I'm reluctant to ever leave my computer in a state where no keypresses
make JAWS speak (except the antidote Insert+Space, then S).

Thanks.

Thanks.
Rik

Rik,

A number of things here...

Insert + s is a global setting that is maintained regardless of what
applications you run. It sticks until you change it back, or until you
reload JAWS. It should not change when you switch from one application to
another.

Ditto for typing echo.

Both screen echo and typing echo can be set individually in a configuration
file for a specific application. If you would rather have screen echo set to

none for a particular application, then use the settings center to make and
save that change. Much better to do it that way if you want it to happen all

the time.

Insert+Space and the letter S completely shuts down JAWS from any speech --

almost the same as exiting JAWS, but just a lot quicker to turn it back on
again. So of course your typing is quiet -- just as is any other JAWS
information that might be spoken, such as reading a line of text in an
E-Mail. I personally don't like to use this mode, as I'm not comfortable
with a situation when my computer appears to be unresponsive. I guess I like

noise.

Hi all,
It has been a good year for Rhapsody Blind and I would like to announce that
Rhapsody Blind 3.0 will be released with multi language capability as well
as some major fixes to the program. It is much more stable and works faster
than before. Given my coding standards now, I went through the entire code
and made it better.
What I would like is for translation to French and English for the North
American continent since these languages are the most common. Any takers?
You will get props in the special thanks section as well as my gratitude.
Any takers?
For those new to the list Rhapsody is an online music subscription service
that has more that 10 million songs available to you. Rhapsody Blind is full
access to the program. An audio demo can be found at www.RhapsodyBlind.com

Thanks,
John Martyn

If it's a later JAWS, 12 or 13,

1. Move your cursor to the row you want as column headers, usually 1 or 2.
2. Press insert+control+alt+c
This will set the row, and set JAWS to read it automatically.

To set the row headers
1. Place your cursor in the column with the important info, usually 1 or 2.
2. Press insert+control+alt+r.
This will set the row header and tell JAWS to read it automatically.

If you have headers in two rows instead of one, select a cell in each
row and press all those keys together.

Hi Lori,

To turn off typing interrupt do the following;
1. Press Insert / Jaws Key + 6 on the number row above the main keyboard to
open the Settings Center then, press Control, shift, + D, to open the
Settings Center default for all applications.
2. Arrow down to Users, press right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, typing interrupt, & press the spacebar to uncheck this
box.

Now, keep arrowing down until you get to Speech Verbosity. This is where you

will change your verboscity to advanced. Do the following;
1. Press the right arrow to open Speech Verboscity.
2. Arrow down 1 time to, Verbosity Level Beginner Highest Speech Verboscity,

& press the spacebar until Jaws reads Advanced Lowest.
3. Now, tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay, press the spacebar,
to save all of your changes, & close the Settings Center.

Hope this helped. Take care.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that, Dave.
I hear you!

I agree about the business of using the insert plus spacebar. It is a bit of

a danger when I forgot that I have Jaws shut off this way.
But I confess I have made a bit of a habit with it and really have not had
too much problem with it.
But I wondered if there was any change in say now the computer would act,
and if say a web page was still reading though jaws was not speaking.

It is not my experience, however, as to what you say about the switching
between applications when using the insert plus 2 method to stop my typing
echo.
It may well be the case that JAWS stays silent for the Scree Echo. But not
ditto for typing echo, as you say. Not for me anyhow.

Just now, for example. I turn off typing echo with insert plus number 2. I
type to this point. Then I alt plus tab to my open wordpad file where I was
pasting some information from a web page for later reference. I peck out a
few words. The characters are all echoed. I alt tab to return to this
email. And my characters are all echoing again. No problem to just turn it
off again. But when I go back and forth quite a bit, I find that the insert
plus spacebar then letter S keeps Jaws off until I say to come back on by
repeating that keystroke set.

So if it, the typing echo, is supposed to stay off between applications, it
is not for me.

Thanks.
Rik

I guess I like
noise.

Thanks.

Rik,

Oh, for that I use Insert+S to set to none.

Again I'm reluctant to ever leave my computer in a state where no keypresses
make JAWS speak (except the antidote Insert+Space, then S).

Thanks.

Rik,

Not a good idea, and why use three keys when just tapping one of the Control
keys will do the same?

I wonder this.
I have been just using that command where you type INSERT and SPACEBAR, and
then press S and JAWS says SPEECH OFF, or SPEECH ON when I repeat the
keystrokes.

I have been stopping my typing echo this way, and sometimes just doing that
when JAWS is reading a lot of junk on a web page that I may not want to hear
at a particular moment.

I wonder if this is not a good practice for any other reason.
I used to configure my Typing Echo settings for different programs. But
lately I have just been doing this, turning speech off and back on.

Thanks.
Rik

Hi folks, I'm brand new to using Excel and have managed to do quite well
from the help system, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to enter
a cell containing text in order to cursor through or edit it! Could anyone
prompt me to this really basic action please?

All the best,
Barry

F2 opens the cell for editing. Enter closes after editing is done.

Would someone please tell me how to auto fit cells so that all the
information in a cell is printed despite its size?

Thank You,

Sharon

Sharon,

A couple things:

First select your entire worksheet and Press Alt+o, then c then a. This auto

sizes all columns in the sheet.

then with everything still selected, Ctrl+1 to open the Format Cells Dialog.

Ctrl+Tab to the Alignment page. Tab to word wrap and check the box.

These things may help.

Also somewhere there is a "shrink to fit" option for fonts, but not sure
where it is. Perhaps on the print dialog.
