Hi, David. Which version of Windows are you running? If you are using Windows 10, here's how to conveniently save shortcuts to apps to the desktop.

Open the Run dialog (Windows+R=run), type in:

shell:AppsFolder

and then press enter to view this folder.

Find an app you wish to create a shortcut for, right-click (applications key, or, shift+f10 and choose Create shortcut from the pop-up menu that appears.

You’ll be prompted that the shortcut cannot be placed here, and Windows will recommend placing it on the desktop instead. Press enter on Yes. A shortcut with the name App-Name Shortcut for example (Mail Shortcut) will appear on the desktop. You can leave this as-is, or rename it (I usually remove the word, Shortcut). And you can of course move the shortcut to any folder as needed.

One note, if you are not using first-letter navigation to find the app in the AppsFolder, you will need to use the left and right arrows, instead of the Up and Down arrows to navigate through the apps. Otherwise, you will miss a lot of apps. This is because the AppsFolder is always in Tiles View, and can only be temporarily changed. The minute you exit the folder, it will return to Tiles View, regardless of how you set it. This is because AppsFolder is a System folder.
