Related to Maria's trick is just using a jump drive or SD card.

If you plug in or pull either of the above you will typically get a system sound telling you that it's either connected and ready for use or that it (or some other) USB device has been removed.

If you yank a jump drive after doing a shutdown, and after waiting at least a reasonable amount of time for a shutdown to complete, you should be pretty safe in assuming that you are shut down if you don't get an auditory signal related to removing a USB device.

I have bent over backwards trying to find a consistent way to trigger a shutdown sound, but have not as yet found it.
