I downloaded Jarte and it looks like a good program. However, it will not open my Word 2000 documents. I will paste in information I got from Jarte upon trying to open a file and then information from CNET about the converter pack. I am reluctant to install the converter pack since it does not mention whether it works with Windows 7. It was released in 2007, probably before Windows 7 was released. It may work and it may not. I have not decided if I want to try it or not, but I do like Jarte in the meantime, other than the fact that it won't open my doc files. That is the fault of Microsoft and not the company who offers Jarte.

Update (Aug 8, 2011): A recent Windows update has disabled Jarte's ability to use the graphics filters in the Office Converter Pack. Therefore, Jarte can
no longer display non-bitmap images in Word 97-2003 binary DOC files. The word around is to use Microsoft's free
Word Viewer
program to open those files.

Jarte can open Word 97-2003 DOC files created by the Word word processor if Microsoft's Office Converter Pack is installed on the computer.

The Office Converter Pack is no longer available at Microsoft's web site, however it can still be downloaded from CNET's Download.com web site using the
link below. Close and restart Jarte after you have installed the Office Converter Pack and Jarte will then be able to open Word 97-2003 DOC files.

.doc and .docx files. And that is the free version. The $19.95 version
does all that besides allowing for customizable keyboard shortcuts,
autocorrect and the storing of clipboard data between sessions.

Jarte works very well with JAWS. In fact, if all you want is a basic word

processing program, then Jarte works even better than MS Word. It is
optimized to work with screen readers, and its menus are simple and
straightforward, unlike the confusing ribbon menus in Word 2007 and
higher. It even has a built-in spell checker and allows you to save
templates. Really a great little word processor.
