I have not followed all of this thread, but have you tried shift+f10 to bring up the context menu on items in the task bar?

The quickest way that I’ve found is to use Alt+F within Office to get to the backstage view, then move down to the Office Account tab with Down-Arrow, then use the tab key to move across to the updates control, where you can press a button
to install updates.
If I remember right, you press tab to get to single click
