I've read a lot about what you're describing, and it wasn't actually anything all that underhanded. A very small percentage of users lost access to their documents because of a bug that was found and fixed a few days later. Those users' access was restored.

Also, there's a difference in subscribing to a documentation platform (IE: Google Docs) and subscribing to a licensing scheme for a documentation suite (IE: Microsoft Office). With the latter, Microsoft doesn't host anything--unless you throw your documents into OneDrive, and even if you let your license lapse you'll still be able to read them. It's no different than if your computer came with the trial version of Office 2016 and you decided not to buy a copy, however you do it.
