There is a similar feature with JAWS.

Make sure it’s properly configured in the JAWS for Windows Quick Settings of Microsoft Word:

  • Make sure focus is in Microsoft Word
  • Open the JAWS Quick Settings of Word (JAWS KEY-V)
  • Within the tree view, focus on “Editing Options”
  • Configure the following:
    • Autocorrect Detection – ON
    • Spelling Error Detection – ON
    • Grammatical Errors (Optional) On or On + Count
  • Save the changes and close the dialog.

Now you can list the spelling errors or navigate among spelling errors with Navigation Quick Keys.

Display a list of misspelled words within the document with ALT-SHIFT-L.

Navigate the list with ARROW KEYS and press ENTER to focus on the misspelled word within the document.

To use Navigation Quick Keys:

  • Toggle the JAWS Navigation Quick Keys with JAWS KEY-Z
  • Press M and SHIFT-M to navigate among spelling errors in a Word document.

Focus is placed on the next or previous spelling error.  You can repair the error yourself or use the Windows Application Menu.

To use the application menu:

  • Press the WINDOWS APPLICATION KEY (the key to the left of the right CTRL)
  • A list of suggested replacements is displayed
  • Navigate the list with UP AND DOWN ARROW
  • Press ENTER on a selection to replace the misspelled word with the replacement

After spell checking the document, disable the Navigation Quick Keys with JAWS KEY-Z.

I have become very attached to the way that Window Eyes lets me move from spelling error to spelling error within the Word document or email with a keystroke.  I much prefer this to the spelling checking dialog feature in both programs, as it let’s me more quickly review the context and determine what correction is needed.  Is there a similar feature with JAWS?  I really fear I will lose efficiency and effectiveness having to rely solely on the spell check dialog box.
