As somebody else already suggested I would call FS support and let them take a look via Jaws Tandem.

hi guys:
I have been following this red thread for sometime;
I have jaws 20:1812.17.54;
Windows 1064 bit machine;
I went and did the repair as Mr. Bill described;
And I found that when using the shift of 10 applications menu to recognize a PDF from FileExplorer it does absolutely nothing the virtualize or window does not come up.
However when I opened it like Mr. Bill said to;
And open it and do an insert space oh then db it does work.
Do I have to actually read do I have to actually reinstall jaws 2018 to correct the problem?

Hi, Sieghard. Most people think they need Adobe Acrobat Reader to use the Recognize with JAWS feature, because they are trying to use the INSERT plus SPACE, O, D method. This is causing confusion. When using the Right Click method on a file, you don’t need any kind of viewer for the file. That’s why I say they are not the same. They both use JAWS, but the INSERT plus SPACE, O, D method always requires a third-party application to complete the process. The Right Click method never requires a third-party application to complete the process.

Hi Bill,

Yes, I don’t claim otherwise, all I am saying that both ways use Jaws Convenient OCR and the results will be the same, just two ways to skin a cat. What was posted before (not sure who posted it any more) sounded like using the “Recognize with Jaws” context menu option was completely different or independent from opening the PDF document in ACrobate Reader and using the layered command.

Hi, Sieghard. Contrary to what you are saying, Opening a PDF file and using the layered keystroke Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by O and D is not the same as Right Clicking on the item and using the Recognize with JAWS feature. In order to use the INSERT plus SPACE BAR, O, D feature, you must have the document open in Adobe Reader or some other pdf viewer. This is not true for the “Recognize with JAWS feature. If you don’t believe me, uninstall your pdf reader and try the Recognize with JAWS feature. It will still work. The INSERT plus SPACE, O, D feature will not work this way. The file must already be open in order to use INSERT plus SPACE, O, D.

Here a few clarifications:

1. Opening a PDF file and using the layered keystroke Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by O and D is the same as right clicking on the file in Windows Explorer and selecting “Recognize with Jaws”. Both use the Jaws convenient OCR feature to perform OCR on the image file and the result is displayed in the virtual viewer.

2. In Jaws 2018 using the Windows Explorer method and the “Recognize with Jaws” menu option is not limited to PDF files, it works on any image file, PDF, JPG, TIF, BMG etc.

3. If you have Jaws 2018 and the “Recognize with Jaws” option Is not present in the application/right click menu when you are on an image file then something definitely went wrong during the installation. I have Jaws 2018 installed on 2 Windows 10 laptops (one old and one quite new) as well as on several Windows 7 desktops at work and on all machines the “Recognize with Jaws” item is in the context menu. I think Convenient OCR is one of the best features of Jaws and I use it often multiple times each day when I get invoices or other documents which are just images and not accessible PDF’s.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Hi Jim,

According to what Dave had sent before, it is Insert+Windows-key+f4.

That seems to reset jaws on the fly.

You’ll want to wait a little until you hear Jaws announce itself again.

Richard,

Just give the JAWS three-finger salute and see what happens. Personally, I think the later versions of JAWS are subject to some serious memory leaks, as evidenced by my system becoming less responsive over time until I restart JAWS and wake things up again.

I just tried going to a folder of PDF’s with Windows Explorer on Windows 10 Home 64 bit with Jaws 2018, using the context menu to use the Recognize With Jaws option and got the message that the OCR component is not installed.

Yet, I have used Jaws to scan a document on my flatbed scanner.

I am always connected to the internet, so Jaws 2018 was installed while I had internet connectivity.

Is there some other mysterious install file I am supposed to find?

Richard
