Another way you can maximize or minimize the ribbon is,

1, enter on a message, 2, press the alt-key to bring up the menu, 3, now press the applications key, up arrow you will hear either collapse ribbon checked, or, collapse ribbon. Obviously, if you hear ribbon collapsed checked the ribbon is already minimized. If it is checked, just press the enter key to uncheck and the ribbon will be maximized again.
