The government paid for the scanner. I just wanted something that would meet my needs not hit a home run. As it was, I had to fight over something because the worker in the second link felt something cheaper would meet my needs. I love it when the sighted decide one thing is better for you and they just listen to what they want to hear, not what will work the best. Sarcastic look.

That sounds very similar to my setup. I use a Canon scanner. It's the cheaper Lide120 but meets my needs very well.

Interesting. I didn't say it was being discontinued, I speculated that
folks may want to check.. I certainly am not looking for an argument.

Maybe this particular vendor isn't selling enough of them to keep them
in stock. Maybe it is something unrelated.

Sorry if I came across argumentative.

Just trying to share information.

I think such most likely over-priced products are getting sold for
less now because of apps like KNFB Reader. I guess in a way you need
to also count the cost of the iPhone with KNFB Reader, but of course
most of us don’t do this because we would have the iPhone anyways so
it really is just an extra $99 to make the iPhone into a very
capable and portable OCR device. Maybe a Pearl with Openbook or this
ReadIt Air can do a bit better, but for most people it’s not 8 or 10
times better since KNFB Reader is probably 90% as good or maybe even
more and at a fraction of the cost.

Hi,

I just checked a vendor I know and trust.

Right now, Boundless Assistive Technology is selling it for $895.

http://www.boundlessat.com/Blindness/OCR-Scanning/ReadIt-Air

The list is $1795.

It has the full description.

Now that I think about it, I saw this demonstrated once and it was
very impressive.

But, since I already had Openbook, I wasn’t interested.

I have to double check but I think mine was around $2000. I was
fortunate, because the state bought mine because of my job. But let
me double check and I will let everyone know.

I just looked at the web site for Readit Air, but they don’t

If someone already has Openbook, and since Openbook works fine
with Jaws, I’m not sure anyone will want to buy another
program/device.

I have a readit air which I highly recommend. It’s not only
portable but it’s extremely compatible with JAWS.

Laura,

In addition to what George said, it is much faster than a
scanner. You can also set it to automatically detect lack of
motion, so that when you have a book under the camera, you can
flip the page, wait a moment, and the camera clicks. Then flip
the next page and wait. The scanning and OCR continue in the
background until you're done. A very nice way to do it. I'm sure
there is information on the FS VFO website on the Pearl camera.

know I got the problem solved …… I unplugged the USB for the
scanner and plugged it back in and it works fine now …… Just
like you suggested.

Laura,

IF it did work in the past, and your Pearl camera or scanner are
turned on, then likely Openbook does not find your scanning
device. Try closing Openbook, unplug the USB for scanning
device, plug it back in, and then launch Openbook.

Hello,

I’m using Open Book version 9 and Jaws 18 …… I can’t get Open
Book to scan a document. Usually I open the program and press
the space bar to scan. When I press the space bar to scan it
says “Open Book untitled one”. If I press the space bar again
it says “Acquisition canceled”.

Can anybody help? …… I’ve never had this problem before.

Thanks,

Laura
