Maybe you should not need additional drivers, but something odd is definitely happening with the sound output on my laptop also. With the windows login screen my headphones sound fine, but after I am logged in The sound quality goes down considerably. I am running the newest version of jaws with windows 10 on a fairly new Dell laptop.

This may be an unrelated problem, but it certainly sounds like it might be something in the settings or drivers that is going on when weuse the 3.5 audio output.

I don’t' even get that. I've tried two separate headsets with one 3.5MM plug and with one, there's no audio and the other, the sound continues to go through the laptop's speakers. No pop-up or anything. Doesn't show up as a device to select in the sounds playback device combo box.
I have to believe there's a step I'm missing of some sort.
Tried this on both a Dell Inspiron (which I'm in the process of returning due to an unrelated audio issue) and a recently purchased HP Envy X360 laptop. I was at BestBuy picking up a tower and asked the tech at the desk and she said that sometimes a drive needs to be downloaded. I guess. These are pretty generic headsets since their not USB. No brand name or anything. I didn't think they would need a driver. I'm not sure that's really it though. Who knows.

My Asus Zenbook also has just one 3.5mm plug, so far it has recognized all headsets or external speakers I plugged in. Whenever I plug something in a window pops up asking me what device I just plugged in and I can select from headset, microphone, external speaker etc. Only once I select will the sound switch.

I have a headset with two 3.5mm plugs (one for the speakers, one for the mic), my laptop only has the speakers jack. The only things I have to make sure of is that I plug in the speakers and not the mic and make sure that the audio volume is not muted (the headset and on-board audio have separate mixers and so one can be muted while the other is not).

I telecommunicate for my business and need both the mic and audio
function for Skype and whatnot. This is the first machine I’ve had
where there is only one jack port. I have to imagine that this has to
work. The headset in particular has only one jack instead of the
regular two jacks in the past, I would use an adaptor to combine both
jacks into one that I would then plug into the back of a tower.

Audio jack like on some laptops are a 3 ring type headset!

Hello list,

So, I got this laptop that has fewer USB ports than my old one. Thus,
my having to optimize my USB usage. It does have a single jack for
headphones and mic. I figured it would just be a case of plugging the
headset jack and having audio go through the headphones. Of course,
nothing can be so easy…

I’m not getting any sound. Jaws or otherwise. My sighted wife says
that when it is plugged in, the volume indicator does switch
reflecting something also, the microphone indicator does fluctuate
when I speak.

It’s been many years since I’ve used a headset with a jack and in this
case, it’s only one jack instead of the regular two jacks (One for
headset and the other for microphone).

Am I in fact missing a step to enable audio? Tried this both on a
Dell laptop that I initially bought and which I’m returning due to an
unrelated issue and an HP Envy X360 Touch screen machine that I’m still setting up.

Any help would be appreciated.
