It depends in part on what service your contacts prefer. I haven't played with it extensively, but it looks like Facebook chat through Thunderbird works fairly well. Thunderbird can connect to your Facebook, Twitter, IRC, Google Talk, and something called XMPP. I've only tried it with Facebook, so I can't say much about accessibility, but it seems like when I've done Facebook chat in Thunderbird, I haven't had any problems. I'm just using the Thunderbird support that came with JAWS 15.

Skype works great especially with Doug Lee's scripts. Yahoo Messenger
