Re: Jaws stops speaking in Windows 7

Dave Durber

Bill, David and anyone wishing to uninstall versions of JAWS for Windows:

First of all, you should never use the Windows uninstall program, in any version of Windows, to uninstall JAWS for Windows.

You should always use the uninstall program, which is provided with each version of JAWS.

If you are using JAWS 15 and you also have JAWS 12, 13 and 14, installed on your computer and you wish to remove JAWS 12, you must first unload JAWS 15, then run JAWS 12, go to the Tools submenu, under the JAWS 12 submenu, in Windows XP, All Programs, in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8, then launch the "uninstall JAWS 12" utility and follow the steps to uninstall JAWS 12.

You should follow the uninstall procedure as described, for any version of JAWS, you want to uninstal from any computer.

Remember, not to check the checkbox, which relates to uninstalling shared components, because this will more than likely, result in the other versions of JAWS on the computer and any other Freedom Scientific product, you may have installed, having problems in working correctly or, not working at all.

HTH

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Hi, David. I'm sorry tyou are having this problem. What I have found is that most of the uninstallers, including the one in Windows7, leaves files and folders after uninstalling programs.

What you might want to do is, first, set your computer to show hidden files and folders in the folder options section.

Then, after uninstalling all your Freedom Scientific products, go into your user files, and check Appdata to see if there are any Freedom Scientific files or folders in there. If so, delete them and try again to install.

One time, after uninstalling firefox, I found settings files in Appdata which were preventing me from doing a clean reinstall of the new program, which had become corrupted.

Unfortunately, that's what I did. I then uninstalled all Freedom Scientific products and removed the folder in Program Files, then cleared out the FreedomScientific tree in the registry so that there would (supposedly) be no trace of the products, then tried reinstalling. I suspect there may be additional registry keys that need to be deleted, but they are proving difficult to find.

David,

It's my understanding that you shouldn't install earlier versions of JAWS when you have JAWS on your system. I think you'd need to uninstall them all, then reinstall one by one, beginning with the earliest and going up in sequence.

I have to wonder why anyone would need so many versions. I remember 9 worked on some websites for a time when later versions didn't, but that ceased to be the case.

Subject: Jaws stops speaking in Windows 7

I have a desktop computer running multiple versions of Windows and have
various versions of Jaws on each.

On the Windows 7 partition, I had full versions and demos of Jaws from
version 9 to 15. I recently decided to do a cleanup and uninstall some
of the earlier versions of Jaws.

Now, when I try to start any version of Jaws such as the Jaws 15 demo,
Jaws will start up, speak "Jaws for Windows is ready", then quit. The
activation dialog no longer appears, so I think that somehow the
activation system has gotten munged. I've tried reinstalling all the
previous versions of Jaws that I can get my hands on, and the same
problem occurs. (Jaws on XP, Vista and 8.1 update 1 on the same machine
start up as expected.)

Has anyone experienced this problem before and can offer a solution?

Thanks in advance!
