I worked for Eastman Kodak, my eye sight got me laid off, but two or three years later they were out of Chicago. Their problems started with one hour photo finishing machines. They also gave a 10 per cent raise yearly, so folks got over paid and did not do much. I did not work their long enough to get over paid.

Keep in mind that the current CEO of FS is a refugee from Eastman Kodak,a company that has had a recent history of bad business decisions and inept management. Twenty years ago, Kodak was still an American icon. Today, it is the laughing stock of Wall St. I was a shareholder for years hoping that the company would finally get its act together, but of course, it never did and was ultimately forced to declare bankruptcy. I just hope the current CEO isn't leading FS down the same path.

I will say that FS is absolutely not the same company as H J.
FS has changed ownership several times of late and the new bunch has not
really demonstrated any real interest in enabling the user to have JAWS at
an affordable price.
I fully believe that government cut backs will eliminate a number of
companies who have gouged the clients for everything they can get out of
them.
This is very true for the providers of assistave devices for the
orthapedically handicapped.
$4,000 for a manual wheel chair is ot ridiculous, it should be criminal.

The big question I keep coming back to is how GW Micro, which is
structured as a for profit company, is going to make any money from
giving it away for free to use with Office. I understand their angle,
that they might get people to buy it if they get used to using it with
Word et al, but I don't think that's going to work how they want it
to.

Hi Kimber,

I haven't tried the free Window-eyes offer yet, but I'm reading mixed
reviews on the various lists I'm on. Some people really love it, but
others are having major issues. I guess that's why I haven't tried it
yet. In other words, I don't think you're alone.

Just as a point of information with no judgment intended, I recently
purchased Office 2013 and thought I'd take advantage of the free
Window Eyes offer to take it for a test drive. Aside from the fact I
found the command structure rather confusing, window eyes
consistently crashed my laptop. This happened so often I decided to
take it off my system and won't be returning to it any time soon.

Your milage, as they say, may vary. But I'm curious to know if this
happened because the two screen readers were vying for the eloquence
synthesizer? Or is there some other inherent conflict between JFW and
WE?

I have since chosen to use NVDA as my backup screen reader for when
Jaws takes a dive.

Thoughts?

GW Micro is also making window eyes available in the maimn menu of

using
window eyes.

I absolutely agree with you in this.
With government funding getting shorter and shorter FS may have
problems selling their wares to their largest client.

No matter how scrittable Narrator becomes, it will never be as
functional or feature-rich as JAWS or Window Eyes. If any screen
reader is in trouble, it may be JAWS, not Window Eyes. As long as
FS continues to charge upwards
of
$1000 for JAWS and makes absolutely no concessions to make it more
affordable like GW Micro has with Window Eyes, it is in more danger
of
going under than GW Micro.

Indications are that Window Eyes is also on its way down the chute.
This move to offer it free with Office is a desperation maneuver,
and
since Narrator will (hopefully, if the reports are correct) be
scriptable in Windows 9 it doesn't look good for GW Micro.
Jaws will probably hang on a bit longer thanks to existing scripts
and legacy programs, but this is not good news for any add-on
screen reader company.

Well, Serotek is still in business, so I guess System Access is
till
around, but who knows for how long? Now that Mike Calvo is gone,
and Window Eyes is being offered free to users of Office 2010 and
2013, not to mention NVDA, which is also free, it is hard to see
how
Serotek can remain a viable competitor in the cscreen reader
market.

Thunder used to read MS Access when JAWS wouldn't. The voice
is awful, but it was a good reader.

Hello Listers,
Could anyone post some of the screen readers downloadable for
free
please?
So I can compare them to Jaws.
Thanks Kevin Hourigan.
