Hello Kimber:
I agree with you, that JAWS should be programmed to take account of both situations. Even if you are using the reveal codes function, JAWS should treat the end Paragraph code, as an non-printable character and therefore speak the period correctly.
Well, as with all situations like this, we will just have to watch this space.

I notified FS about the period vs dot issue yesterday. I received an email from Tracey Jackson asking whether the problem occurs when paragraph marks are hidden. It doesn't, but in my opinion that is far from a solution. Since my reply I haven't received any further correspondence from FS. Hopefully it will go on their list of things to fix.
Thanks, Kimber

I think that JAWS is interpreting the Word Paragraph symbol following the period, in the same way as it has been programmed, when the period is followed by an alphabetical character, e.g. .com, .exe, etc.
Try putting a space character after the period at the end of the paragraph,
then pressing the ENTER key, then read the paragraph. If JAWS says "period",
then you should let FS know about this problem.

Thanks Dave. Hmm, it's interesting that I'm not seeing the dot vs period issue in notepad too.

The paragraph indicator in MS Word, is its representation for the Carriage return plus line feed, which is what you get in basic editing programs, such

Hi Ted and all,
Ted has hit on exactly the scenario in which the dot vs period announcement issue occurs.
In Word 2003 using Jaws 15, Jaws reads the period as a dot when the punctuation occurs at the end of a paragraph, that is immediately before a paragraph symbol. If however, I insert a space before the paragraph symbol, Jaws reads the punctuation as period just as it should.
In notepad the period is read correctly all the time, which makes sense I guess because there are no paragraph indicators in notepad documents. Am I right about that?
In any case, I will report this issue to FS. Thanks to everyone for helping me figure it out so I may report it accurately.

Does this happen at the end of a paragraph? JAWS does strange things when the punctuation runs into the paragraph mark.

I followed your suggestion about changing the period in the customize punctuation area of setting center. Interestingly enough, the description contained there says period and not dot. In fact I am seeing this same strange misannouncement in word 2010 with jaws 15 on my office computer too. So it isn't specific to the version of word I am running at home.

An easier way is to bring up the settings center (jaws+6), switch to the default config (ctrl+shift+d), go down to the Punctuation group and then hit space on "Customize punctuation", when the list appears type the period key, then tab a couple times to the Edit Description button.
If the text has been replaced somewhere else the dictionary is probably your best bet.

Hi All,
I recently installed Jaws 15 on my laptop running Word 2003. I find that instead of saying "period" at the end of a sentence, Jaws 15 is saying "dot." This is really annoying.
Is there some way to change what Jaws says from dot to period when it encounters the punctuation? Incidentally, when I type a period Jaws 15 says period.
Thanks, Kim
