Re: Using Mail-Merge in Word 2010

Simple, I set the file type to save everything as .doc and .xls files
instead of the XML equivalents, then just open the files up. I also use
(prepare for some folks to fall over in fits of apoplexy around here when I
type this) use a classic menu program so I don't have to fool with the
stupid ribbon, and I run the ribbon in virtual mode in Jaws. I know other
folks have problems with this, but it have none, so it works fine for me.

I'd open it up and take a look at what's in your data source. That
said
I run things in compatibility mode a lot, as I sometimes trade files
with folks that haven't made the switch to 2007 or later, and Word
2007
still reads that older Excel file with no problems.

Nicole:

Yes. In fact, that's where I'm having my problem. The merge
document will not connect with the data source. The data source,
though, was prepared using Word XP, which is a much earlier version
of Word, and I am wondering if this might be part of the reason why
the connection is not being made.

I'm not sure about 2010, as I use 2007 and it may have changed. I
edit my data source in Excel, because it's actually an Excel
spreadsheet.
I've noticed that mail merge requires some very specific steps, and
they're all fairly logical, but I haven't used it in about four
months so I'd need to review the process to advise you. And I've
noticed that it has a much harder time (at least 2007 does) in
keeping the data association with the document.

Subject: Using Mail-Merge in Word 2010

Dear Listers:

I have recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 and from
Word
XP
to Word 2010. When I used Word XP I prepared a mail-merge
database
of
the names and addresses of people I would send Christmas cards to
each
year.
After I upgraded to Word 2010 I discovered that the data source is
still there, but for some reason I can't use the mail-merge wizard
the
way I used to do when I used Word XP. In XP, after I had selected
my data source and the list of names and addresses would pop up, I
would just tab once and there would be a "select all," option. In
Word
2010
this option is not there. When I tab once after the list of names
appear, it is telling me that the number of items selected is
zero.
Do any of you know how to go about selecting the people you want
to
use in your merge using Word 2010?
If so, how do you do it? Do any of you know how to edit your list
of recipients using Word 2010? If so, how do you do it?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Nicole, how do you do that? How do you run things in compatibility
mode?
