The accessibility of windows live mail on windows 8 is the same as it is on
windows 7. It's not ideal, but it's quite usable. It supports both pop3 and
imap, and you can use a gmail account.

Note that the current version of windows live mail is in fact 2012, but the
differences between the 2011 and 2012 versions are only very minor
differences in the ribbons.
