Re: Access to YouTube with JAWS

Hello Jeff and all,

While not solving the JAWS problem, perhaps a trial with an interface site:

www.accessyoutube.org.uk

might assist in the short term, while matters are resolved elsewhere. It is very simple, but also restricts access to all other links on your chosen page. ?Win some, lose some? Should be worth at least a 15 minute trial.

Paul Benson.

Subject: Access to YouTube with JAWS

Whenever I try to access YouTube with JAWS on my laptop freezes. If I turn
JAWS off, I can access YouTube just fine with the assistance of a sighted
person, of course. I have an HP laptop less than 1 year old with Windows 7,
and the latest version of Firefox. Does anyone know what I need to do to
access YouTube with JAWS on?

Kind regards,

Jeff

Thanks, Dave.

I'd really like to get the rocker sswitch to work if possible, since it
allows for a very quick volume adjustment when needed.

Still, though, I appreciate your additional suggested work-around.

Tom,

You may also be able to control the volume using Fn + F3 and Fn+F4. I
agree
that the rocker switch/buttons are not the easiest to deal with, but they
should give you the full range min/max.

Hi, all.

Well, it turns out that our friend Dave Carlson was right.

Disabling the touchpad mouse via the bios on my Dell Lattitude D600 laptop
worked.

I want to sincerely thank everyone on the list for tolerating this thread,
and I want to especially thank James for allowing the thread to proceed to
its conclusion.

I do have one more dilemma I'm wrestling with, so any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Specifically, I am unable to control the volume of the laptop speakers via
the little rocker switch that is right below the monitor and above the
main
keyboard.

I can control the volume by using the control key plus page up or page
down,
but it's a bit clumsy.

If anyone has any suggestions for re-activating the main laptop volume
control, I'd appreciate them.

On the positive side, Jaws installed very easily onto the laptop, and
responds very well to various key commands, so I am making progress.

Thanks again, everyone, and Happy New Year!

Ctrl+f will work in some situations, like Internet Explorer, for example.
In situations where that doesn't work, as in Microsoft mail clients like

Try the fn key with a function key. Often the Dell *mute key is
fn_f7, volume down is fn-f8, and volume up is fn-f9. Or maybe *mute
is fn-f8, down is fn-f9, and up is fn-f10.

Be sure you remember what you did, in case you need to undo it.

Good luck!

Dave:

This is a Dell Lattitude D600, not a D620.

And, the buttons are as you describe with one exception:

On the right is the power button, then, moving to the left, is the mute
button, and finally to the left of that is one longer button which feels
like a rocker switch. You press it to the right to increase volume, and to
the left to decrease the volume. It's this control I can't get to work.

Hello Frank:

I am using a BrailleWindow 40 character braille display with JAWS 14 and I
have been using it with all the versions of JAWS since 5.0 with no problems.

The Biostar motherboard I have in my computer, did not come with physical
serial or parallel connectors. I had to get an expantion plate, with a
serial and parallel port with connectors that connected to headers on the
motherboard.

I have not tried connecting the Braille Window display, using a USB to
serial connector or, USB to parallel connector. Maybe, someone else has
done that and can suggest which brand to use.

Okay folks. Now we're straying away from anything remotely to do with JAWS.
Might want to switch to discussing this one in private.

Tom,

What you're calling a rocker switch does not exist on a Latitude D620.
That
might be the Infrared detector. The up/down volume and mute buttons are
located as follows:

Start with the power button. Next one to the left is the mute toggle. Then
the next two buttons left of mute are the down/up volume buttons. Further
left of those two round buttons is what I think is the IR detector.

Disabling the touchpad mouse via the bios on my Dell Lattitude D600
laptop
worked.

I want to sincerely thank everyone on the list for tolerating this
thread,
and I want to especially thank James for allowing the thread to proceed
to
its conclusion.

I do have one more dilemma I'm wrestling with, so any suggestions would
be
appreciated.

Specifically, I am unable to control the volume of the laptop speakers
via
the little rocker switch that is right below the monitor and above the
main

Hi all:

Is anyone using JAWS with Google Docs or Chrome? To this point I have
found them (Google Docs especially), to be painfully inaccessible with
JAWS. From what I've read you either have to disable all of JAWS
features that allow it to work on the internet, or you need to use
Google's own screen reader, which naturally they prefer. Chrome is
usable, but I haven't found it as nice to use as say Internet Explorer
or Firefox, and even Freedom Scientific doesn't seem to list Chrome in
their popular applications nor have I heard any talk about it in any
FSCasts either in demonstrations of other programs or just in general.

Best,

Patricia

Hello Karen:

CTRL+F, is the standard Windows keystroke command to enter the find feature
in almost any Windows software.

the "Find" feature in a program, is designed to search only the entire area
of the type of file the program creates and uses. The search function of a
program, cannot perform searches outside the defined area of the file.

After you turn on Keyboard help, by pressing JAWS/INSERT+1, on the main
keyboard, then you press, JAWS/INSERT+CTRL+F (Desktop Keyboard layout),
JAWS/CAPS LOCK+CTRL+F (Laptop Keyboard layout), JAWS says: "Activates the
JAWS Find dialog."

When you repeat the JAWS Find command (twice quickly) within JAWS Keyboard
Help, JAWS says: "It can only search the screen area to find any instance of

the text or graphics that you enter. To search for graphics, enter the text

label of the graphic. Use the application's find or search for more
extensive searches."

Turn off JAWS Keyboard Help, by pressing JAWS/INSERT+1, on the main
keyboard.

The reason why the JAWS Find function is restricted to the screen area, is
because it uses the JAWS Cursor to perform any search. For example, it can
search for items on the screen, such as menu bars, buttons on tool bars
etc., which are located outside any area where the application cursor is
programmed to go.

The strange thing is that when you press CTRL+F, to get information about
the Find function for applications, in the JAWS Keyboard Help function, JAWS

says nothing at all.

The same goes for when you press CTRL+H, which is the Windows command to
enter the Search and Replace function in Microsoft programs.

HTH

Sincerely:

Dave Durber

Happy New year, Dave and everyone else.

Let me add here that I've developed the habit of adding the JAWS key to
control+f for "find" in almost all applications. It used to be the only way
JAWS would find anything in Firefox, and it also works in IE. JAWS
key+control+f also is, or used to be, the only way to find in a PDF
document.

Since the JAWS find key combination works almost universally, while the
Windows command control+f does not, I made a habit of using it across the
board.

For anyone still preferring Skype 3.8 over later versions and being
nagged to upgrade, here is the corporate version of skype 3.8. A
friend asked for this and I thought I share with the community.

In order not to be nagged about upgrading anymore (or even being
upgraded without permission), do the following:

1. Completely uninstall your current regular "Skype for Windows".
(You may want to use something like the registry cleaner part of
c-cleaner after doing so.)

2. Install the corporate version of skype 3.8

3. In your brandnew shiny Corporate skype 3.8, go to

tools/options/advanced

and uncheck the two checkboxes about update notifications.

You should now be left in peace and not see any furhter upgrade notices.

For anyone running win 7 and wanting to go back to skype 3.x, I have
uploaded a portable version of the corporate skype 3.6 which
supposedly doesn't complain about the operating system being wrong as
skype 3.8 does.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/0n8kko
I only read that in some forum but have not be able to test it myself
as I do not have access to anything newer than win xp.

If anyone does try this portable skype 3.6 under win 7, please let me
know the results.

You will have to get out, i.e. exit your current installed skype to
run the portable version but not uninstall it.

I know it doesn't much have a lot to do with the overall topic of the list.
I'd ordinarily suggest it be instead posted to the blindtech list, but I see
you've already done that. So, if you have questions re: this thread, let's
see them off-list, please.

In order not to be nagged about upgrading anymore (or even being upgraded
without permission), do the following:

1. Completely uninstall your current regular "Skype for Windows".
(You may want to use something like the registry cleaner part of c-cleaner
after doing so.)

2. Install the corporate version of skype 3.8

3. In your brandnew shiny Corporate skype 3.8, go to

tools/options/advanced

and uncheck the two checkboxes about update notifications.

You should now be left in peace and not see any furhter upgrade notices.

For anyone running win 7 and wanting to go back to skype 3.x, I have
uploaded a portable version of the corporate skype 3.6 which supposedly
doesn't complain about the operating system being wrong as skype 3.8 does.

http://www.sendspace.com/file/0n8kko
I only read that in some forum but have not be able to test it myself as I
do not have access to anything newer than win xp.

If anyone does try this portable skype 3.6 under win 7, please let me know
the results.

You will have to get out, i.e. exit your current installed skype to run the
portable version but not uninstall it.

I have no idea, really. I do not even know for sure if skype 3.6 will
work on win 7.

The portable version will not interfere with your installed version
as long as you are not running both at the same time. so if you feel
adventurous, just go ahead and try it.

If you are not running skype 24/7 or rely on some particular skype
plugin, you may want to try gw connect as an accessible alternative.

How do we read or even click on anything in Itunes help. Jaws goes to
an edit box and gets stuck Tab just goes in and out of forms mode
Switched to manual forms mode. Pressed Jaws f7 for a list of links and
could only find a few even though there were supposed to be 13 results.
I'm not happy with Itunes.

It seems to me that the help files is not accessible from the help

around that.

Hello:

I was wondering if any users on this list are running the latest build of
JAWS and Office 2013 on Windows 8. If so, I have a number of
questions/potential issues that you may be able to answer, and/or may be
having yourselves.

Just joined the list, and look forward to contributing.

I tried activating the side bar with control s, and the side bar shows, but
I'm looking for the links in my purchase history and hidden purchases to
show up in the virtual viewer. The side bar just takes you to stuff in the

Hi,
Finally an expert developed these instructions.
I hope they work for you.
Happy NewYear.
Directions for moving .PST file from Outlook 2003 to Outlook 2010. From
Windows XP
There are two methods to find what is often called Outlook.pst
1. First Method is to type this into the run bar with your username in
place of "username".
2. "C:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application
data\microsoft\outook\" (without the quotes)
3. Your .pst file will exist in this folder
Skip to step 21 to proceed to copy the .pst file
Second way to open .pst folder location follows
4. Open up my computer on the desktop
5. In order to complete the task we have to make sure that hidden files
are shown and directions to do this follow immediately
6. Hit "ALT T" and down arrow to Folder Options
7. Press enter
8. Control tab to view
9. Press tab three times till you get to "files and folders"
10. Down arrow 10 and press the space bar
11. Tab to apply hit spacebar then tab to Ok.
You can now see hidden files
12. You will be returned to the My Computer menu
13. Open up your C: Drive
14. Then open Documents and Settings
15. Open your user account folder
16. Then open local settings folder
17. Next open the Application Data Folder
18. Then open the Microsoft folder
19. Next open the Outlook folder
20. Inside that folder you will find your Outlook.pst file.
21. To copy "your.pst" file you want to right click the .pst and select
copy.
22. Then you want to paste the item to some type of removable media.
23. At that point you would have your PST file on removable media and be
able to take it to your new computer.
24. Remove the removable media from your old computer and hook it up to
your new computer.
25. Open Outlook on your new PC and setup your email account using your
email information.
26. Once your account has been created its time to import in your PST
file
27. While in Outlook 2010 select the file.
28. Down arrow to options and hit enter
29. This will open a new window called outlookoptions
30. Down arrow to advanced then tab to export and press enter (I know
this sounds funny but Export will also allow the import function)
31. The import/Export wizard will open
32. By default "Select to import from another file or program" is
already selected tab to next and press enter
33. Tab to "Outlook Data File.pst" then select next
34. On the next screen select the Browse button and point it to where
your pst file is located on the removable media highlight it tab to next and
press enter.
35. Press enter on next and the importing begins

Then sorry I wasn't able to help. I'm having some significant issues with
iTunes 11, and wish I hadn't accidentally updated.

I tried activating the side bar with control s, and the side bar shows,
but
I'm looking for the links in my purchase history and hidden purchases to
show up in the virtual viewer. The side bar just takes you to stuff in the
Itunes library. The links in my purchases history and hidden purchases are
suppose to take me to any music, or movies, or TV Shows I've bought in the
Itunes store. In my case, Itunes says that I have 1 hidden purchase. When
I
click on hidden purchases, I am automatically on music. I have no hidden
music items. I want the links for Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc to show up

It seems to me as if I haven't been able to successfully clik or press enter
on the make payments link on the Bank of america web site, since I installed
Jaws 14. Has anyone had this same trouble? I can't make it work in Jaws 13
either. Could the new fsdom have caused this problem?

Thanks,

Peter

If JAWS 13 worked before the installation, 14 may have made changes
requiring either an uninstall or a fix by FS.

I find sometimes the make payments link doesn't work with the first press of
the enter key. However, pressing the space bar or pressing enter again will
usually activate it.

I use insert+f7 to find make payments and it is slightly more reliable but
still may need to be pressed twice.

I hope this helps.

With the sidebar enabled I can go below iTunes store and see my purchased

Press tab after you get to the purchased history.
May have to press it more than once, I know I hve seen my whole history

Listen to the last FS cast, 79 I think, Jonathan does a good job on
describing 11. It is slightly different than 10 but, perfectly usable with
Jaws. I am no expert, however, I can do those things I want or need to do.

I doubt it, unless you enable the sticky keys feature in the accessibility
page, then carefully use that key sequence on Fn. However no guarantee that
sticky keys will work with Fn.

sticky keys will work with Fn.
