Re: Audible.com site with Jaws

Drew,
Other than someone mentioning that they didn't like how the search had changed, I don't recall that any particular navigation problems were pointed out. What started this thread was a JAWS user's general frustration with the new layout and a request for some tips on how to navigate it.

Have you tried the submenus, and did they work consistently for you with JAWS? If they're not working for you, have you found any other way to get to your Account Details other than via the new accessible page? That could become important if you ever need to change your member plan, billing options or password. Other links on the accessible page are also choices on the 3 new submenus.

I use audible several times throughout the week and dispite noticing the
change with sub menus, I haven't had any problems navigating and getting to
where I want on the main page. What parts of the site specifically have the
most navigation problems. Just interested.

Your account details are in the submenu that's attached to your greeting at
the top of the regular home page. If you try that submenu enough times,
you'll probably get lucky. I played with the submenus for a couple of hours
with 3 different screen readers when I found out about them, and I never
discovered a pattern in the successes versus failures. It doesn't look like
much testing with screen readers was done before they rolled out those
submenus.

I'm afraid that what we have now with Audible is to be expected from Amazon.

They were forced to make the Kindle somewhat accessible, and their efforts
at accessibility with the Kindle for PC program have been less than stellar.

I have been trying for months to get Amazon to make their Prime Instant
Videos more accessible by using a standard button or link to start the
stream instead of the custom graphical button they use now, but I haven't
had any luck.

Hi, Gary.

I know what the pass-through key combo is, and I was just reporting my
experience with those particular links. However, I didn't try to access my
account. I would be very unhappy if Audible has, indeed, set it up so that
we're forced to use the so-called accessible version. Amazon, parent of
audible, has a similar accessible page option. I believe it sets a very
bad
example. As Tom has just suggested, our emphasis ought to be on making the
main pages of any website properly accessible, not having our surfing
confined to some distant corner of the Internet. Most of us know where
that
leads. Get out your Ouija boards and ask the justices behind the 1954
Brown
v. board of Education decision.

Adrian,
The instructions on the elements with the submenus say to use the Pass
Through Key and then the Spacebar. In the Desktop Layout, this
combination
is The Insert Key plus 3 on the number row. As mentioned in a previous
post, sometimes you will get a submenu after following these instructions,
and sometimes you won't. Audible knew they'd get complaints from blind
people, which is why they created our special page. Did you know that
your
account details are on one of those submenus? If they don't work , you
must

use our special page to get to them. Aren't you glad now that they
created
a special page just for us?

Coincidentally, I've just had to order a book from Audible, and I find it
has changed very recently. The combo box that gave a choice among author,
title, phrase, etc., has gone. Even so, I just plugged in the name of the
author, without quotes, and Audible figured out exactly whom I was
looking
for.

I also notice at least two links that state they contain options and that
in
order to access those options, you must press the access key plus
spacebar.
I tried that and didn't detect any options. However, pressing enter on
each
of those links took me where I wanted to go.

I haven't tried it with Jaws 13 but I will certainly do that. I've
been a member of audible for ten years and I've never been so
frustrated as I am with this new site.

The submenus are giving me fits and the "add to cart" links don't seem
to work consistently. Also, the new search is much harder to use than
the old one wherein you could search on title, author or key word.

I'm going to send audible an email about the lousy accessibility (and
the bone they threw us with that supposedly accessible site).

Any tips will be much appreciated.

Kim,
The accessible page that Audible so kindly provided for us seems to just
be

a way to get to the areas of the site that appear as choices on the new
submenus. These submenus that are attached to your greeting, the
Library
link, and the Shop Audible link don't work well with JAWS and other
screen
readers even though they give you instructions for activation. By the
way,

the Library link replaces the old My Library link, and even though it
has
a

submenu attached to it, it is accessed in the usual way with JAWS either
by

pressing Enter or by activating it in the list of links.

The accessible page is less cluttered than the regular home page because
it

doesn't have the long lists of suggested books and authors. The regular
home page, though cluttered, is quite accessible. What type of content
are

you having trouble finding? You should probably use JFW 13 with the
site
since that's the latest version you have.

Hi All,

If anyone has recently visited the audible.com site and successfully
navigated it with Jaws 12 or 13, I would love some tips. I am having a
difficult time with the new layout and simply don't find all the
content I want on the "accessible" version of the site.

Thanks in advance,
Kim
