Re: Occasional JAWS 13

Marquette, Ed <Ed.Marquette@...>

OK.
I use JAWS 13 only in an emergency. Here is what happened (BTW this is not recommended).
Our crack IT Department introduced an automatic update distribution product that is supposed, somehow, to update computers on the network with security patches and such. It is supposed to do so without requiring a computer restart.
The next morning after deployment (I had JAWS 12 running on my laptop and logged in to the network, though I was sleeping), JAWS 12 completely stopped working with IE. Things that worked perfectly just stopped. The labels in a Web application I have to use vanished. The so-called "Quick Keys" all stopped working. In short, I think JAWS 12 was corrupted -- at least insofar as IE is concerned.
Well, I could do a JAWS repair, but I have to get someone from the IT Department (I'm not trusted with administrative rights). So, I just started using JAWS 13. It worked better in IE than did my corrupted JAWS 12 (which isn't saying much).
I discovered, however, that in Office 2003 products, JAWS 13, in a word, sucks. The proper headers are not read; it doesn't handle the calendar correctly; it fails to read track changes, and so on.
So, I unload JAWS 13 and load JAWS 12 when I need to work in Office 2003 applications.
Our IT Department is allegedly building a new laptop with Office 2010. So, I'm tolerating this strange state of affairs for another couple of days.

Ed,

I'd be interested in knowing for what functions you occasionally use JAWS
13?

I might want to adopt that methodology.

Windows 8 may ve interesting. I listened to a Podcast through iBlink Radio
(iPhone App) put out by the NVDA folks.
It looks like Windows 8 will have touch screen gesture type functionality as
well as support for little programs, like Apps on the iPhone, that connect
to the Web but do not require the browser as is typically the case in
Windows today.
If JAWS 14 is fully supporting all that new Windows 8 stuff, the things
broken in JAWS 13 will probably just stay broken.

I guess we will just have to wait. I'm content with JAWS 12, even though I
have (and occasionally have to use) that train wreck called JAWS 13.

Oh, good grief.

I'm working on getting a new computer right now, which will have Windows
7...

Now, they are putting out an 8.

At least, my Jaws is current, for whatever that is worth.
